Thacher Winery is a family-owned and operated winery located on the west side of Paso Robles, California. The winery is known for its small production of high-quality wines, including Zinfandel and Rhone varietals. Sherman Thacher, the founder of the winery, has been making wine for over 20 years and has a passion for creating unique blends that showcase the terroir of Paso Robles.
The History of Thacher Winery
Sherman Thacher started his career in wine as a vineyard manager in Napa Valley before moving to Paso Robles to start his own winery. In 2004, he purchased a property on the west side of Paso Robles that had been used as a horse ranch. He converted the barn into a tasting room and began planting vines on the property.
Today, Thacher Winery produces around 3,000 cases per year from their estate vineyards as well as other local growers. The focus is on producing small-lot wines that showcase the unique characteristics of each vintage.

Thacher Winery produces several different varietals including Zinfandel, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Mourvedre, Syrah and more. Each wine is made with care using traditional techniques such as hand-picking grapes and fermenting with native yeasts.
One standout wine from Thacher is their flagship blend called "Cabeza," which means "head" in Spanish. This blend changes every year but typically includes Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre grapes grown on their estate vineyards.
Another popular wine from Thacher is their Zinfandel which comes from old vines planted in 1910 by Italian immigrants. These vines produce low yields but high-quality fruit resulting in an intense yet balanced wine.
