Tellus Institute is a non-profit research and policy organization that aims to advance a planetary civilization rooted in justice, well-being, and sustainability. The institute's work focuses on three key dimensions of transformative global praxis: understanding, vision, and action.
Understanding
At Tellus Institute, we believe that understanding is the foundation for transformative change. Our team of researchers works to deepen our collective understanding of complex social-ecological systems by conducting interdisciplinary research on topics such as climate change, energy transitions, sustainable agriculture and food systems, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem services.
Our research approach is grounded in systems thinking which recognizes the interconnectedness of social-ecological systems. We use this approach to identify leverage points for systemic change that can help us move towards a more just and sustainable future.
Vision
In addition to deepening our understanding of complex social-ecological systems through research, Tellus Institute also works to develop scenarios that envision alternative futures. These scenarios are designed to challenge current assumptions about what is possible while inspiring new ways of thinking about how we can create a more just and sustainable world.
Our scenario development process involves engaging with stakeholders from diverse sectors including government agencies, civil society organizations, businesses as well as local communities. By bringing together diverse perspectives we aim to co-create visions for the future that are both desirable and feasible.
Action
Finally at Tellus Institute we recognize that transformative change requires action at multiple levels - from individual behavior change all the way up to global policy reform. That's why we work with networks for change - connecting people who share our vision for a more just and sustainable world so they can collaborate on projects aimed at creating positive impact.
We also provide training programs designed to equip individuals with the skills they need to become effective agents of change within their own communities or organizations. Our training programs cover topics such as systems thinking, scenario planning, and stakeholder engagement.
