Springfield Center for Independent Living (SCIL) is a non-profit, non-residential service and advocacy organization that provides free services to people with disabilities and seniors. The center is based on the independent living philosophy, which believes that people with disabilities should have the same rights, choices, and opportunities as everyone else.
SCIL was founded in 1985 by a group of individuals with disabilities who wanted to create an organization that would help them live independently in their communities. Today, SCIL serves over 1,500 individuals annually in Greene, Christian, Webster, Polk and Dallas counties.
The mission of SCIL is to empower people with disabilities and seniors by providing them with the tools they need to live independently. The center offers a wide range of services including information and referral services; peer support; independent living skills training; advocacy; assistive technology demonstrations; housing assistance; transportation assistance; employment assistance; youth transition services.
One of the unique features of SCIL is its peer support program. Peer support groups are led by individuals who have personal experience living with a disability or caring for someone who does. These groups provide emotional support as well as practical advice on how to navigate life's challenges.
Another important service provided by SCIL is its housing assistance program. The center works closely with landlords to ensure that rental properties are accessible for people with disabilities. In addition, SCIL provides home modification grants so that individuals can make necessary modifications to their homes such as installing grab bars or wheelchair ramps.
SCIL also offers employment assistance services which include job coaching and resume writing workshops. The center works closely with local employers to identify job opportunities for people with disabilities.
In addition to its direct service programs, SCIL also engages in advocacy efforts at the local,state,and national levels.The center advocates for policies that promote independence,equality,and inclusion for people with disabilities and seniors.
