SeriousFun Children's Network: Bringing Joy and Possibilities to Children with Illnesses
SeriousFun Children's Network is a global non-profit organization that provides camps and programs for children with serious illnesses. Founded by actor Paul Newman in 1988, the organization has grown into a network of 30 camps and programs around the world, serving over 135,000 children and their families each year.
The SeriousFun global family of camps and programs helps children and their families reach beyond illness to discover joy, confidence, and new possibilities. The organization believes that every child deserves the chance to experience childhood despite their illness or condition. Through its various programs, SeriousFun provides a safe environment where children can have fun, make friends, learn new skills, build self-esteem, and gain independence.
The camps are designed to cater to different age groups from six years old up to young adults aged 25 years old. Each camp offers unique activities that are tailored according to the needs of each child. Some of these activities include swimming, horseback riding, arts & crafts sessions as well as music lessons.
One of the most significant benefits of attending a SeriousFun camp is that it allows children with similar conditions or illnesses to connect with one another. This connection creates an instant support system for both the child who is ill as well as their family members who may be struggling emotionally or financially due to medical expenses.
SeriousFun also offers year-round programming through its outreach program called "Camp in Hospital." This program brings camp-like experiences directly into hospitals so that seriously ill children can still enjoy some fun while receiving treatment.
In addition to providing support for sick kids through its various programs worldwide; SeriousFun also supports research on pediatric diseases through partnerships with leading medical institutions such as Yale University School of Medicine.
