SENCA Headstart: Empowering Children and Families in Southeast Nebraska

SENCA, or Southeast Nebraska Community Action, is a non-profit organization that has been serving the communities of southeast Nebraska since 1965. The organization's mission is to empower individuals and families to achieve self-sufficiency through education, advocacy, and support services. One of SENCA's most important programs is its Head Start program, which provides comprehensive early childhood education and development services to low-income children and their families.

SENCA Head Start serves children from birth to age five who come from families with incomes below the federal poverty guidelines. The program operates in 12 counties across southeast Nebraska, including Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, Richardson, Gage, Saline, Thayer, Jefferson, Otoe Cass County (NE), Atchison County (MO), Holt County (MO) & Nodaway County (MO). SENCA Head Start offers a range of services designed to meet the unique needs of each child and family.

One of the key components of SENCA Head Start is its focus on early childhood education. The program uses evidence-based curriculum that promotes school readiness by developing children's cognitive skills as well as their social-emotional development. Children participate in activities that help them develop language skills such as reading books aloud or singing songs together with their peers.

In addition to educational programming for children enrolled in the program SENCA also provides health screenings for all enrolled children within 45 days after enrollment into our program. This includes vision screening; hearing screening; height/weight/BMI measurements; dental screening; lead testing; immunization review & referral if needed.

Another important aspect of SENCA Head Start is its emphasis on parent involvement. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child's learning by volunteering at school events or attending parent-teacher conferences regularly throughout the year. Parenting classes are also offered through SENCA so parents can learn new skills related to parenting such as positive discipline techniques or how best they can support their child’s learning at home.

SENCA understands that many low-income families face challenges beyond just financial hardship which may include food insecurity or housing instability among others . To address these issues head-on we have partnered with other community organizations like local food banks or housing authorities so we can provide additional resources for our families when needed.

Overall Senca headstart has been an integral part of southeast Nebraska communities for over half a century now providing essential services like early childhood education & development along with other supportive programs aimed at empowering individuals & families towards self-sufficiency while addressing some common challenges faced by low-income households today!
