Seedling Foundation: Empowering Children of Incarcerated Parents

Seedling Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to support children who are facing the challenges of parental incarceration. The foundation believes that every child deserves a chance to succeed in life, regardless of their circumstances. Seedling’s mission is to provide innovative, research-driven, school-based mentoring programs that help children overcome the obstacles they face and achieve their full potential.

The Seedling Mentor Program is designed to provide children with a long-term relationship with a caring adult mentor who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement. The program matches each child with a volunteer mentor who meets with them once a week during the school year. Mentors serve as positive role models for these children and help them develop important life skills such as self-esteem, resilience, and goal-setting.

Seedling’s approach is unique in that it focuses on providing mentoring services within schools. This allows mentors to work closely with teachers and other school staff members to ensure that each child receives the support they need both inside and outside of the classroom. By partnering with schools, Seedling can reach more children in need while also ensuring that its programs are integrated into students’ daily lives.

The foundation’s commitment to research-driven practices ensures that its programs are effective at helping children overcome the challenges they face due to parental incarceration. Seedling works closely with researchers from leading universities across the country to evaluate its programs’ impact on students’ academic performance, social-emotional development, and overall well-being.

In addition to its mentoring program, Seedling also offers other services designed specifically for families affected by parental incarceration. These include family events where parents can connect with other families facing similar challenges; workshops for caregivers on how best to support their children; and resources such as books and videos aimed at helping families navigate this difficult time.

Seedling Foundation has been making an impact in Central Texas since 2005 when it was founded by Susan Cotton after she witnessed firsthand how parental incarceration affected her own family members' lives. Since then, it has grown significantly thanks in part due generous donations from individuals as well as corporate sponsors like Dell Technologies.
