Rowan Oak

Never heard of this place before and I've lived within 75 miles of it for over 20 years
So glad we planned the trip through Oxford on our way to Tupelo. Only $5 to tour the home. Very much worth it. Free to tour the grounds.

Great spot to visit for William Faulkner fans and history buffs. The house is well maintained and curated to give an authentic look at how Faulkner s home looked when he occupied it.

A wonderful museum about 5 blocks from the house. To see how Faulkner lived and how his rooms looked after his death is like taking a snapshot in time. Really cool.

What could possibly be said about Faulkner beyond 5-Stars and you need to go see it yourself.

A fabulously historic location. Great for nature walks, animal walks, or photography.

Illuminating peek at Faulkner's life. Tour was self-guided, but still informative. Student representative was pleasant and helpful, and the entrance fee was modest (they accept cash only!). While several of the rooms seemed like standard "this is what an old house looked like" fare, there were enough placards and informational displays about the author's life to make it relatable.

Of the house itself: The author's personality is still evident in his home. Of note were the sparseness of his daughter's room to the literal writing on the walls in his study and telephone nook. (Perception of these areas varied widely within our group: did the study graffiti reflect a carefree spirit who didn't care about appearances or materials, or a somewhat callous soul who lived like he knew and didn't care that someone would have to clean up after him?)

Wonderful museum with great artifacts! If you are interested in William Faulkner it is a must see!

Beautiful Landscaping...Only 5$ to tour the home but free to tour grounds. Great location for outdoor wedding or other event.

If you have any interest in Faulkner or Southern lit, do it! Very friendly, knowledge staff.

Even with the museum closure due to COVID, we were able to walk the beautiful grounds and enjoy Bailey Woods. There were informative posts along the trail informing about Faulkner and Rowan Wood. Gorgeous!

Great place to visit even if you're not into literature. Lots of history and antiques. Quite and peaceful setting with beautiful views. There is an easy hiking trail you can take from campus to here.

Such a wonderful visit! I appreciate that they offer the self guided tour so that we could roam the house and grounds at our own pace and in the order we preferred. Staff are obviously incredibly knowledgeable.

Love William Faulkner, so I loved seeing where he wrote most of his best novels and stories. Beautiful place.

The grounds and house are fascinating. You can step through the doorway of each room, held back by a plexiglass half-circle. It only costs 5 bucks and you can wander around as much as you'd like. Very low-key, very cool.

Just a lovely place and omg the trees are so beautiful.. after closing hours a lot of photographers and their subjects come here to take pictures, but there are plenty of places to lay down a blanket and relax without being in any bodies way. Never been during open hours.

Whether a fan of Faulkner or not, this property is a relic that can be appreciated by any nature lover or history buff. While Oxford has grown around Rowan Oak, the home and property still feel secluded, remaining quiet and harboring its natural environment that Faulkner so adored.
For fans of Faulkner, such as myself, the tour becomes far more enchanting - walking into and experiencing the spaces he existed in while writing some of his seminal works. Highly recommended.

Truly impressive old mansion, but no tourist services at all during hours we visited.

I had a wonderful visit and loved the grounds of Rowan Oak. This is a real treasure in Oxford. If you are interested in literature (Or history in general), include a stop here to learn about William Faulkner and his family.

Their web page says they are open. They are not. Gate is locked with sign that only says they are closed "until further notice". They should have reopened by now, but regardless, their web page needs to be accurate.

It's beautiful and a great place for those who love Faulkner's works.

We didn't take an official tour, but we enjoyed the beauty of the exterior of the house and the grounds. A lovely piece of American literary history. I'm glad it's available for the public to see.

Ethereal place. Perfect atmosphere for aspiring writers.

A step back into history. I can only imagine what it was like during Faulkner's era. Still yet a little bit of the inspiration he felt is there in the magic of these old walls. Just imagine open your eyes and see.

It is a self guided tour. The man who is the caretaker is very nice, knowledgeable, and interesting. It was raining so we didn't explore the grounds.

A MUSEUM WITHOUT A GIFT SHOP!!!! I dare you to ask to buy a t-shirt or poster here!! Great bit of history, beautiful scenery. It's a gem in the Palm Springs of the Bible Belt. Terribly under utilized potential profit generator here!!

The home of William Faulkner, on of the greatest Mississippi writers of all time who was awarded the Nobel Prize for his literature. He was an alcoholic most of his career. The home & grounds feature the "slave"/later the help quarters, a smoke house, a barn where Faulkner housed his various horse's & the main house also known as Rowan Oak. There are no Rowan Oaks on the property.

William Faulkner's home. City of Oxford has grown around the property, but it still feels as if you are miles away from civilization, quiet, peaceful, lovely setting. Interesting and historical.

This place has so much history and yet is falling apart. Sad to see it slowly decay.

Fun piece of history, but unlikely to excite. Beware: your kids will be ready to go after 5 minutes.

Excellent place of historical significance. Some new rooms recently opened up to public veiwing. Reasonably priced at $5.

The gate was closed when they say the grounds are open from dawn to dusk daily. I still made it there through the trail.

The home of William Faulkner is a cool place to see when touring the University of Mississippi or Oxford, Mississippi. I did not have the chance to tour the house itself, but the outside and property is beautiful. The handicap parking is not easily accessible and it is a bit of driving through unpaved roads and bumpy paths to get to the house. It is within walking distance from the Ole Miss. A good history spot of Mississippi.

With COVID you cannot tour inside the home right now but you are still free to walk the grounds from dawn to dusk. It s a beautiful property. There are 150 year old cedars lining the walk in. The grounds are well kept, but not over kept. Definitely worth a stop

I absolutely love this place!!! It has so many much memorabilia than a few years ago. I loved listening to Faulkner's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech on the head phones. Bill was great. It was a wonderful experience!! I do love all things Faulkner & Ole Miss.

It's an old house with pretty trees. The hiking trail goes up to the baseball field.
