Honestly, worst service I have ever had in a restaurant. There was literally 1 other table in the entire place and my server came to check on me about once every 30 min. It was insane. Do not recommend this place to anyone. There is literally one other table in the entire place and my server checks on me about once every 30 min. I am actually still here.. right now.. waiting for my check to be picked up. I am so pissed off right now I have been waiting so long. I have literally never written a review on here, but this is so bad, I felt compelled.

Went for a visit with some old friends. The place was packed for happy hour. We missed the specials, but split a wonderful pork loin and enjoyed some nice local on tap cider. Food was a bit pricey, but delicious and worth it. Someone ordered scallops that were devine. It was just a short walk to visit the big Christmas tree. Fun night out!

I went here with my boyfriend for Valentine's day and it was some of the best food I have ever tried. I got the scallops with oxtail risotto and a side of brussels sprouts that came with this mustard sauce. It was absolutely amazing my mouth is watering just thinking of it, it's like I can still taste the food! My boyfriend got the NY dry aged steak which was also phenomenal, I can't wait to go back and eat there again!

We hit the Red Star twice during our latest trip to Portland, and we are in love! Stellar food, stellar service! Tommy the bartender, and Michelle, the waitress, are service superheros! It will pretty much be our go-to place in downtown Portland for food and drink from here out! Michelle served us drinks and dinner during a four hour stay the first night we went in, and was simply amazing: friendly, sweet, always there when we needed something, but never pushy. Our second trip, we were tended to by Tommy the bartender, and he rocked our world. Drinks every time we needed them, food for the hungry, huge amounts of information on the town and the people in it, a super-friendly demeanor. He was even able to tell us where to go in our home state to find a guy who used to be the chef at one of our other favorite Portland restaurants! Five stars plus!

Here for a work conference and have been in the last two evenings for a night cap. The bartender is very welcoming and knowledgeable. Easily some of the best Manhattans and Old Fashioneds I've had in ages - smooth and with beautiful presentation. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in Portland!

Overall: Red Star Tavern is a centrally locates restaurant and bar with with a great location in the heart of Portland.

Ambiance:
We love the casual fine dining experience inside. It s. Great sophisticated location and easy to hear and hold conversations.

Service:
Our server Cheryl was so nice and enjoyable. Food and drink service was 100%!!

Food/Drink:
We ordered the house red wine - great wine for $5. We also ordered the pinwheel fries, and yummy fried chicken sliders to share. The food and drink was a delicious snack to help forget the busy work day.

Value: The wine and fries were reasonably priced. The chicken sliders were a little pricey for what you got, but still a yummy snack.

We simply came in for a night cap, but this was by far one of the best bar experiences I have ever had. The waiter (sadly I forget his name) was fantastic and very accommodating of us having a table booth for just a couple of drinks. The atmosphere was fantastic, and the beer/cocktails were the best I've had. Left me buzzing to visit Portland again.

Ok prices, delicious foods, tasty cocktails. Easy to get to by bus/train. Friendly (but damn slow! Took 10 minutes for them the take my drink order, another 10 for them to bring it to me, then about 30 minutes for 1 chicken taco!) staff. Swanky interior, but still has a casual vibe. I see mostly business people there just having fun whenever I go.

The food was very good, the dining room was much nicer than the pictures on the web site (the pictures almost steered me away), and the service was good although the wait staff were wearing jeans and no type of professional uniform even on Valentine's Day.

The happy hour at the Red Star is amazing! You'll be shocked at how low the food prices are! In addition to great pricing, the food is delightful! Vegetarians be wary of the lack of meat-free items on the menu, but carnivores are in heaven at this place. The drinks are so scrumotious, that once you've ordered your first, you'll be ready for your second and third.

Terrible experience children screaming and running around the establishment barefoot with no shoes or socks on. Staff is oblivious had to point out the obvious unsanitary health violations. Ordered the 18 dollar burger took a half hour to receive in a mostly empty restaurant and the burger was raw when was requested to be prepared well done. Makes sense this place is empty on a Saturday night terrible place to eat we just abandoned our food and left as we did not have another half-hour to wait for a properly prepared burger.

We went for happy hour. The staff is very nice, friendly without attitude. The happy hour food and drink specials are what I'd expect for downtown. The atmosphere is a bit dark, but not in a dive-bar way. More like an older hotel that could really use some updating.

Ok good. Eventually not worth the price. Usually you get a lot of food for a high price or a little bit of food that taste amazing for a high price. Your food taste like food from a box, and your meat had so very little flavor it wass so sad. I'm not exaggerating when I say I have had better food at IHOP then here.
NOTE TO OWNERS: fire your chef, or lower your prices. But do not charge top of the line prices for bottom rung food

Wait staff was friendly. Place was fairly busy for a Tuesday, but they were still on their A game. Had a pork chop with slaw and yams. I've lived in NC for the last 20 years, and slaw and yams are basically staples here, but rarely together. The slaw was served over the yams, and the chop sat on top.

The slaw was simply the best I've ever had. I ordered this plate expecting to pick around the slaw, since it's not usually my favorite dish. It was crisp, not drenched in mayo nor vinegar, and was perfect. The yams were creamed, sweet and perfect. I'll bring people here when we're in town. Bravo.

The service was good. The chef must have been on a break because it took a long time to get a simple breakfast but the waiter gifted us with a huge block of coffee cake which was delicious. The coffee was not what I expected, a real disappointment, bitter and weak. I hope this is not a Portland coffee trend!

Late night staff: very much attention to detail and food protection! I m very impressed! The staff members are first and foremost professionals in their trade and they are very careful and attentive to customer needs and the small details that can make or break a bar or food establishment.

I m impressed with the impeccable level of cleanliness and detain and the about of work the night staff do for preparation. A bar tender and Bar back here work in concert! I ve seen hand washing, checking glasses, verification of work.

I love the Red Star. It's total high class. I can't stand dirty bars with sleezy people . I need new proper people to have conversations with . Definitely one of my favorite lounges in portland. There needs to be more lounges in portland. Especially with rooftop gardens
