Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) is a collaborative Bio-medical Research and Service delivery organization founded in 1987, formerly the Rakai Project.
Rakai Health Sciences Program (RHSP) is a leading biomedical research and service delivery organization that was founded in 1987. Formerly known as the Rakai Project, RHSP has been at the forefront of innovative research and healthcare solutions for over three decades.
The organization's mission is to improve the health and well-being of communities in Uganda and beyond through cutting-edge research, training, and service delivery. RHSP's work focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support; infectious disease control; maternal and child health; reproductive health; non-communicable diseases; mental health; nutrition; water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH); community engagement; capacity building; data management systems development.
RHSP has a team of highly skilled professionals who are dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge while improving access to quality healthcare services. The organization collaborates with local communities, government agencies, academic institutions, international organizations such as WHO/UNAIDS/PEPFAR/GAVI/Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation among others.
One of RHSP's flagship programs is the Rakai Community Cohort Study (RCCS), which is one of the largest longitudinal studies on HIV/AIDS globally. RCCS has contributed significantly to understanding HIV transmission dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa while informing policy decisions on prevention strategies such as voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation guidelines among others.
RHSP also runs several other research projects that focus on infectious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB), malaria control interventions including indoor residual spraying(IRS) , neglected tropical diseases(NTDs) like schistosomiasis , soil-transmitted helminths(STHs). The organization also conducts clinical trials for vaccines against various infectious diseases like Ebola virus disease(EVD).
In addition to its research activities,RHSP provides comprehensive healthcare services through its network of clinics located across different districts in Uganda. These clinics offer a wide range of services including HIV testing & counseling(HTC), ART initiation & follow-up care , family planning(FP)/reproductive health(RH) services , maternal & child health(MCH) services including immunization programs for children under five years old .
RHSP also implements community-based interventions aimed at improving access to clean water sources through borehole drilling projects or rainwater harvesting systems installation . They also promote good hygiene practices by constructing latrines or handwashing facilities within households or schools.
Furthermore,RHSP invests heavily in capacity building initiatives aimed at developing human resources for health(HRH). This includes training programs for clinicians,nurses,laboratory technicians,data managers,social workers,counselors among others . These trainings are conducted both locally within Uganda but also internationally with partners from other countries like Kenya,Tanzania,Zambia,Malawi,South Africa etc..
