Project R.I.D.E. Inc.: Empowering Students with Disabilities through Therapeutic Riding
Project R.I.D.E. Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides therapeutic horseback riding programs for students with disabilities in the Central Valley of California. Founded in 1979, Project R.I.D.E. has been serving the community for over four decades, helping children and adults with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges to improve their quality of life through equine-assisted activities.
The mission of Project R.I.D.E. is to empower individuals with disabilities by providing them with opportunities to develop their physical abilities, communication skills, self-esteem, and social connections through horseback riding lessons and other equine-related activities. The organization's vision is to create a world where people of all abilities can live fulfilling lives without limitations.
At Project R.I.D.E., students are paired up with certified therapeutic riding instructors who have extensive training in working with individuals who have special needs. The instructors use a variety of techniques and exercises that are tailored to each student's unique abilities and goals.
One of the key benefits of therapeutic riding is its ability to improve physical strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and range of motion for riders who may have limited mobility due to conditions such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida or muscular dystrophy. Horseback riding also provides sensory stimulation that can help students develop better body awareness and sensory integration skills.
In addition to the physical benefits of therapeutic riding lessons at Project R.I.D.E., there are also significant emotional benefits for riders as well as their families and caregivers. Many students report feeling more confident after participating in horseback riding lessons because they learn new skills while having fun in a supportive environment.
Moreover, interacting with horses can be very calming for individuals who struggle with anxiety or behavioral issues related to autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Horses are known for their ability to sense human emotions and respond accordingly which makes them excellent partners for therapy sessions.
Another important aspect of Project R.I.D.E.'s programs is its focus on volunteerism which allows members from the community an opportunity not only support but also participate directly in making positive changes within it by giving back through volunteering time or resources towards this worthy cause.
Volunteers play an essential role at Project R.I.D.E., assisting instructors during lessons by leading horses or walking alongside riders as side-walkers ensuring safety while providing encouragement along the way; helping out around the barn; fundraising events; administrative tasks; etcetera - there's always something that needs doing!
The volunteers come from all walks-of-life including high school students looking for community service hours; college interns seeking hands-on experience working within non-profit organizations; retirees wanting something meaningful & rewarding during retirement years - everyone has something valuable they can contribute towards making a difference at Project Ride!
In conclusion,
Project Ride serves over 600 Central Valley students annually using certified therapeutic riding instructors & gentle horses along-with volunteers dedicated towards empowering those living daily challenges due-to disabilities achieve greater independence & quality-of-life!
