Our History
The San Francisco SPCA was founded in 1868 by a group of concerned citizens who were appalled by the mistreatment of animals in their city. Over the years, our organization has grown and evolved into one of the most respected animal welfare organizations in the country.
In 2014, we changed our name from The San Francisco SPCA to Pets Unlimited. This change reflects our commitment to providing comprehensive services for all types of pets β not just cats and dogs.
Our Services
At Pets Unlimited, we offer a wide range of services designed to meet the needs of both pets and their owners. These include:
Adoption Services: We have an extensive adoption program that matches homeless pets with loving families.
Veterinary Care: Our state-of-the-art veterinary hospital provides high-quality medical care for pets in need.
Behavior & Training: We offer behavior consultations as well as training classes designed to help pet owners build strong relationships with their furry friends.
Pet Loss Support: Losing a pet can be devastating. Our Pet Loss Support program provides counseling services for those who are grieving the loss of a beloved pet.

Our Impact
Over the years, Pets Unlimited has made significant contributions towards improving animal welfare both locally and nationally. Some highlights include:
- In 1989 we opened one of the first no-kill shelters in America.
- In 1994 we launched Maddie's Fund β an organization dedicated to ending euthanasia as a means of controlling pet overpopulation.
- In 2003 we opened our state-of-the-art veterinary hospital β one of only two nonprofit hospitals accredited by AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) on California's Central Coast.
- In 2010 we launched SFACC (San Francisco Animal Care & Control) β an innovative partnership between local government agencies aimed at improving access to veterinary care throughout San Francisco's underserved communities.
