Paws with a Cause is a non-profit organization that has been enhancing the independence and quality of life for people with disabilities nationally through custom-trained Assistance Dogs. The organization was founded in 1979 by Mike Sapp, who had a vision to help people with disabilities live more independently and confidently. Since then, Paws with a Cause has trained over 4,000 Assistance Dogs that have been placed across the United States.
The mission of Paws with a Cause is to provide highly skilled Assistance Dogs to individuals who are challenged by physical disabilities, hearing loss or deafness, seizure disorders, or autism. These dogs are trained to perform specific tasks that help their owners live more independently and safely. For example, some dogs are trained to open doors or retrieve dropped items for individuals who use wheelchairs; others can alert their owners when they hear important sounds like smoke alarms or doorbells.
One of the unique aspects of Paws with a Cause is its commitment to custom training each dog based on the individual needs of its owner. This means that each dog undergoes extensive training tailored specifically for its future owner's disability and lifestyle.
