About Ozharvest

OzHarvest is Australia’s leading food rescue organisation. At our core, we save surplus food & deliver to charities that help people in need

OzHarvest: Rescuing Food, Nourishing Lives

OzHarvest is a non-profit organization that has been at the forefront of food rescue in Australia since 2004. The organization was founded by Ronni Kahn, who was inspired to take action after witnessing the amount of food waste generated by the hospitality industry. Today, OzHarvest is Australia's leading food rescue organization and has become a beacon of hope for those struggling with hunger and malnutrition.

At its core, OzHarvest's mission is simple yet powerful: to save surplus food and deliver it to charities that help people in need. The organization achieves this through a range of innovative programs and initiatives that are designed to reduce food waste while also addressing issues related to poverty, social isolation, and environmental sustainability.

One of OzHarvest's flagship programs is its Food Rescue program, which involves collecting excess food from supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and other businesses across Australia. This rescued food is then sorted and distributed to over 1,300 charities nationwide that provide meals for vulnerable communities such as homeless people or those living below the poverty line.

In addition to rescuing surplus food from businesses across Australia through their Food Rescue program; OzHarvest also runs several other initiatives aimed at reducing waste while supporting local communities. For example:

- NEST (Nutrition Education Sustenance Training) provides free cooking classes for disadvantaged individuals or groups who may not have access or knowledge about healthy eating.

- FEAST (Food Education And Sustainability Training) offers educational workshops on topics such as composting & gardening.

- REAP (Rescued Edible Agricultural Produce) collects fresh produce from farmers who would otherwise discard it due to cosmetic imperfections or oversupply.

Through these various programs & initiatives; OzHarvest has been able not only to reduce wastage but also provide much-needed support for vulnerable communities across Australia.

Ozharvest's Impact

Since its inception, OzHarvest has rescued over 100 million kilograms of food, which equates to over 400 million meals. This has not only helped to reduce food waste but also provided much-needed support for vulnerable communities across Australia.

The organization's impact goes beyond just providing meals; it also helps to address issues related to social isolation and environmental sustainability. By rescuing surplus food that would otherwise end up in landfill, OzHarvest is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a more sustainable approach to food production and consumption.

Ozharvest's Awards & Recognition

OzHarvest's innovative approach to addressing issues related to hunger and food waste has earned the organization numerous awards and recognition both nationally & internationally. Some of these include:

- The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) named OzHarvest as one of its Champions of the Earth in 2019.

- In 2020, Ronni Kahn was awarded an Order of Australia Medal for her services towards reducing food waste.

- In 2021, OzHarvest was recognized as one of the world's most innovative companies by Fast Company magazine.

Conclusion

In conclusion, OzHarvest is an inspiring example of how a simple idea can have a profound impact on society. Through its various programs & initiatives aimed at reducing wastage while supporting local communities; this non-profit organization has become a beacon of hope for those struggling with hunger and malnutrition across Australia.

By rescuing surplus food from businesses across Australia through their Food Rescue program; NEST (Nutrition Education Sustenance Training), FEAST (Food Education And Sustainability Training), REAP (Rescued Edible Agricultural Produce); Ozharvest is not only helping people in need but also promoting environmental sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfilling edible foods.

As we continue our journey towards creating a more sustainable future; organizations like Ozharvest will play an increasingly important role in shaping our collective efforts towards a more equitable and sustainable world.
