Attending Ocean Recovery in Newport Beach back in August 2022 was a fantastic choice. I was really impressed by the clinical staff and their personalized approach to each patient. They also organized excellent community meetings to help ease the transition after treatment. The experience was so positive that I recently recommended it to a lifelong friend.

After visiting several rehab facilities, I can confidently say Ocean Recovery is the best. The clinical team in Newport Beach genuinely cared, helping me grow in ways I never expected. Their patience and kindness gave me real hope for maintaining my sobriety, and I’m so grateful for their support.

While I had a few wonderful staff members—Sam (my therapist), Keyer, and Kylie—who genuinely listened, others like Michelle, Brooke, and Meeghan seemed to enjoy breaking me down. I was forced into protocols meant for eating disorder patients, including being pressured to eat large amounts of food with the threat of being moved to a behavioral facility if I refused. It felt unjust since I didn’t have those conditions. They also lacked nuance. When I withdrew from group sessions due to tension with another resident, I was labeled a "bully" by Brooke and Michelle without much context. I even had a minor incident involving a phone number misinterpreted as a romantic interest, leading to an unnecessary group intervention with my father. It felt like they were ganging up on me rather than seeking understanding. If you’re a resilient young person who just needs tools for healthy living rather than a full-scale overhaul of your personality, this place might chip away at your spirit. They break you down to rebuild you, which works for some, but it felt demeaning to me. I’ve since built a beautiful life on the beach, proving their fears wrong, but the psychological toll of the experience was real. Just make sure their intense, clinical approach aligns with what you actually need.

While Ocean Recovery offers a serene oceanfront setting in Newport Beach for their substance abuse programs, their women’s track is heavily geared toward eating disorders rather than just addiction. I worked there and noticed that roughly 95% of the female clients had eating disorders, so that’s where the real focus lies. The staff employs a "tough love" style, which might be exactly what you need if other treatments have failed, but it’s certainly not a one-size-fits-all solution. Back when I was an employee, the place felt understaffed, though that might have improved since. I’d probably give it a 2.5, but I’m knocking it down to 2 stars because of the inflated 5-star ratings from staff, which is common in the industry.

My stay at the Newport Beach facility was complicated by what felt like a hidden agenda. The staff seemed convinced that every patient has an eating disorder, which they appear to use as a way to extend the program and increase revenue. While we were initially told the commitment was 30 days, many of us were blindsided when the stay was suddenly extended to 99 days or more. The environment felt cult-like and somewhat frightening. They leveraged the trust families place in medical professionals to get signatures, using betrayal tactics once you were already inside. It felt like a "Hotel California" situation where you couldn't trust anyone; even my private thoughts were scrutinized and called out, which was deeply unsettling. I never want to return. Even now, the memory of that daily betrayal leaves me feeling physically ill and traumatized.

I recently used the services of this company, and I must say that my experience was average. The website was informative, and it was easy to navigate, which was a plus. However, I found the response time to my inquiries to be a bit slow, and I expected better communication throughout the process. The quality of the service provided was satisfactory, but I believe there is room for improvement. Overall, I would rate my experience as average, and I hope to see improvements in the future.
