I'm an employer who sent out a job offer to someone enrolled in this npower course - I received the signed acceptance letter back from the candidate. I was flexible in the new hire's start date and daily hours in order to accommodate npower's class times. The program coordinator manager told (yes told, not advised) my new hire that he had to decline the job because there were some evening events that they're holding that can't be missed.
Npower's web site talks about getting jobs for young people yet they told him to reneg on a job offer that he already accepted.
I smell a scam!

Their teachers are so rude. They do not care about you if you do not speak fluent english. The discrimination exists in the classroom. They treat you like a trash if you do not speak fluent english or you do not act the way they want you to. I was wasting my time for 2 months there ending up getting nothing. they provide the program for free to lure you in. but at the end they can fire you with a fabricated reason or without a reason(that is written on the contract). Not worth your time at all.

I enrolled in NPower s JR IT Analyst program, intrigued by their promise to bridges the gap between non-traditional and diverse job seekers and employers hiring ICT talent. I was under the impression this meant they would provide under-represented/marginalized individuals with valuable, sought after skills and was eager to better myself in the midst of the pandemic and take time to learn new skills that might suit me in an increasingly digitized workforce. I was thrilled that courses Npower offered came at no costs to participants. Big mistake. You re definitely getting what you pay for with Npower. Government bodies, financial institutions and tech oligarchies are all greasing palms here as reflected in the stuffy, unfocused, and incoherent curriculum. If you can call it that- it s more like daycare for adults. Participating in NPower means subjecting yourself to unprecedented surveillance (webcams must be kept running during washroom breaks), countless hours of condescending personal development exercises (Meyers Briggs, vision boards, uninspired Tony Robbins gibberish about following your dreams) , strict adherence to attendance (1 minute late results in a warning email- I can only imagine what happens if you step out during a compulsory TED talk) and teachers who can scarcely run a zoom meeting without fumbling around, giggling and guffawing about how bewildering conference call technology can be. Essentially everything people from marginalized communities are justifiably skeptical of.

After several weeks of this I was crushed. It was clear the course was complete waste of time but I had realized this too late and decided to salvage what I could by working independently as opposed to withdrawing from the program altogether. I began missing classes as I found I could cover the content more efficiently on my own. When I received a call warning against further absences I pushed back a little by saying that I was fully aware that I had missed several classes that the call came across as intrusive. Big mistake. I had now been labeled a troublemaker. I was summoned for a check- in video call which, essentially, played out like a deposition. I remained steadfast and unapologetic in regards to my absences as, from my perspective; the lessons could go on just fine regardless of whether I was there or not. This was seen to be an unacceptable and disrespectful attitude as it deviated from what they referred to as their (hostile) workplace simulation. What would happen were you miss days once you begin working?
Well, that wouldn t happen because I d then be a liability for a company I am paid to do a job for which is not the case here.

The conversation went on like this for a really long time until eventually one teacher had a meltdown and began yelling about how he should be making more money. I was confused but allowed myself to be scolded because I really wanted to stay in the program and didn t know how else to get out of this call.

The next day was more of the same. Though literally nothing had changed since yesterday s meeting, I was called for yet another Mandatory Check-In but this time I was meeting with the Program Director as well. During this meeting I was assured that I would be monitored even more closely and that my work be reviewed by the Program Director herself in order to support me. I had enrolled to learn new skills and boost my attractiveness to prospective employers, not to be a guinea pig for whether three people could suffocate a person from the comfort of their home offices. I felt nauseous. I had wasted an entire month of my life. How could people be so cold, so relentless? The next morning I listened to my voicemail. Her voice came through my phone like salt in a wound as she cheerfully notified me of my absence from today's class. I blocked the number instantly.

My sympathies are with my ex-colleagues still hoping for a competitive IT training as they fill out another bank survey. They each deserve so much better. But hey, keep those heads high and webcams on; Friday is PJ day!
