About Nekton foundation

First Descent is a series of expeditions to explore and conserve the world’s most unknown and least protected ocean, The Indian Ocean.

Nekton Foundation: Exploring and Conserving the Indian Ocean

Nekton Foundation is a non-profit organization that aims to explore and conserve the world's oceans, with a particular focus on the Indian Ocean. The foundation's flagship project, First Descent, is a series of expeditions that seeks to uncover the mysteries of this vast and little-known body of water while also raising awareness about its importance for global biodiversity and human well-being.

The Indian Ocean covers an area of approximately 70 million square kilometers, making it the third-largest ocean in the world. Despite its size, however, it remains one of the least explored and least protected regions on Earth. This is partly due to its remote location and challenging conditions but also because it has received relatively little attention from scientists and policymakers compared to other oceans such as the Atlantic or Pacific.

First Descent seeks to change this by bringing together an international team of scientists, engineers, filmmakers, journalists, educators, and local stakeholders to conduct cutting-edge research in some of the most unexplored areas of the Indian Ocean. The expeditions use state-of-the-art technology such as submersibles, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), drones, acoustic sensors, and DNA analysis tools to study everything from deep-sea corals to plankton communities.

One key goal of First Descent is to identify new species or habitats that have never been seen before by humans. This could include deep-sea creatures adapted to extreme pressure or temperature conditions or unique geological features such as underwater volcanoes or canyons. By documenting these discoveries through high-quality images and videos captured during each expedition (which are shared with audiences around the world via social media channels), Nekton hopes to inspire people everywhere about how amazing our planet's oceans truly are.

Another important aspect of First Descent is its focus on conservation. Nekton recognizes that exploring new areas can also lead to increased threats if not done responsibly. For example, deep-sea mining, oil and gas exploration, and overfishing are all potential risks to the Indian Ocean's fragile ecosystems. By working closely with local communities, governments, and other stakeholders, Nekton aims to promote sustainable management practices that balance economic development with environmental protection.

One way that Nekton is achieving this is by creating marine protected areas (MPAs) in collaboration with partner organizations such as the Seychelles government. MPAs are designated zones where certain activities such as fishing or mining are restricted or prohibited in order to conserve biodiversity and ecosystem services. First Descent expeditions have helped identify areas of high ecological value that could benefit from MPA designation and provided scientific data to support their establishment.

In addition to its scientific research and conservation efforts, Nekton also has a strong educational component. The foundation believes that engaging young people in ocean science is critical for building a more sustainable future for our planet. To this end, it has developed a range of educational resources such as lesson plans, videos, games, and virtual reality experiences that can be used by teachers around the world.

Overall, Nekton Foundation's First Descent project represents an exciting new frontier in ocean exploration and conservation. By combining cutting-edge technology with interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement, it is helping us better understand one of the most important but least understood regions on Earth while also inspiring us all to take action towards protecting our oceans for future generations.
