Marlsgate Plantation is a stunning Greek Revival Mansion located in Scott, Arkansas. This stately columned mansion overlooks the picturesque Bearskin Lake and is a testament to the rich history of the area. As custodians of this heritage, Marlsgate Plantation endeavors to ensure that this magnificent house and its treasures will be preserved for future generations.

The History of Marlsgate Plantation

Marlsgate Plantation was built in 1877 by David Abe Bogle, a prominent businessman and planter in Arkansas. The mansion was designed by architect George R. Mann and features classic Greek Revival architecture with grand columns, ornamental cornices, and intricate moldings.

Over the years, Marlsgate Plantation has been home to several notable families including the Bogle family, who owned it until 1926 when it was sold to John A. Cooper Sr., founder of Cooper Communities Inc., one of Arkansas' largest real estate development companies.

In 2004, David P. Garner purchased Marlsgate Plantation with a vision to restore it to its former glory while preserving its rich history for future generations.

Today, visitors can tour this historic mansion and experience firsthand what life was like during the heyday of Southern plantation living.

The Architecture of Marlsgate Plantation

Marlsgate Plantation's architecture is an excellent example of Greek Revival style that dominated American architecture from about 1820 until after the Civil War. The style is characterized by grand columns supporting pediments or porticos at entrances or porches.

The mansion's exterior features six massive Ionic columns on each side supporting an entablature with dentil molding under a pedimented gable roofline adorned with modillions (decorative brackets). The interior boasts high ceilings adorned with intricate moldings and ornamental cornices, grand staircases, and elegant chandeliers.

The Grounds of Marlsgate Plantation

Marlsgate Plantation's grounds are as impressive as the mansion itself. The property spans over 1,000 acres and includes a pecan orchard, a lake stocked with fish, and several outbuildings including a carriage house and a smokehouse.
