Komaza: Reviving Degraded Lands in the World's Most Deforested Areas

Welcome to Komaza, a company on a mission: to revive the productivity of degraded lands in the world's most deforested areas. Founded in 2006, Komaza is a social enterprise that combines sustainable forestry with technology and innovation to create economic opportunities for smallholder farmers and restore degraded landscapes.

Komaza operates in Kenya, where over 80% of forests have been lost due to deforestation and land degradation. The company works with smallholder farmers who own or have access to degraded land, providing them with training, resources, and support to grow trees as a cash crop. By doing so, Komaza helps farmers increase their income while restoring the health of their land.

The company's approach is based on three pillars: planting trees that are suited for local conditions; using innovative techniques such as intercropping and agroforestry; and leveraging technology such as mobile data collection and machine learning algorithms.

Komaza has planted over 5 million trees on more than 20,000 hectares of land since its inception. The company has also created over 10,000 jobs for rural communities through its tree-planting activities.

One of Komaza's flagship programs is its microforestry model. This model involves working with smallholder farmers who own or have access to less than two hectares of degraded land. Komaza provides these farmers with seedlings, training on tree planting techniques and management practices, as well as access to markets where they can sell their timber products at fair prices.

Through this program alone, Komaza has helped over 7,000 smallholder farmers plant more than 3 million trees on nearly 10 thousand hectares of land. These efforts have resulted in increased incomes for these farmers by up to four times their previous earnings from subsistence farming activities.

Another key program that sets Komaza apart from other forestry companies is its use of technology. The company has developed a mobile data collection platform that allows field staff to collect data on tree growth, soil quality, and other environmental factors in real-time. This data is then analyzed using machine learning algorithms to optimize tree planting and management practices.

Komaza's use of technology has also enabled the company to scale up its operations rapidly. In 2019, the company secured $28 million in funding from investors such as Novastar Ventures and AXA Investment Managers. This funding will enable Komaza to expand its microforestry model to reach more smallholder farmers across Kenya.

In addition to its social and environmental impact, Komaza's work has also been recognized for its economic benefits. In 2018, the company was named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies in Africa for "creating a new market for smallholder farmers by turning degraded land into profitable timber plantations."

Komaza's success is due in large part to its commitment to sustainability and innovation. By combining these two principles with a focus on social impact, the company has created a model that not only restores degraded lands but also creates economic opportunities for rural communities.
