About Ironstone farm

Ironstone Farm is home to a nonprofit Andover horse farm providing equine therapy, and educational and recreational riding programs that change lives.

Ironstone Farm: Changing Lives through Equine Therapy and Riding Programs

Ironstone Farm is a nonprofit horse farm located in Andover, Massachusetts. The farm provides equine therapy, educational and recreational riding programs that have been changing lives for over 50 years. Ironstone Farm has become a beacon of hope for individuals with disabilities, veterans, at-risk youth, and those seeking to improve their mental health.

The farm was founded in 1960 by the Gould family as a working dairy farm. In the early 1990s, the family decided to shift their focus to horses and began offering therapeutic riding programs for children with disabilities. Since then, Ironstone Farm has grown into one of the largest equine therapy centers in New England.

Equine Therapy

Equine therapy is an evidence-based treatment approach that uses horses to help individuals with physical or mental health challenges improve their quality of life. At Ironstone Farm, trained therapists work alongside horses to provide a safe and supportive environment where clients can learn new skills and overcome obstacles.

The benefits of equine therapy are numerous. For example:

- Physical benefits: Horseback riding can help improve balance, coordination, muscle strength and flexibility.

- Emotional benefits: Horses are non-judgmental animals that can help reduce stress levels while increasing feelings of happiness.

- Social benefits: Working with horses requires communication skills which can translate into better social interactions outside of the barn.

- Cognitive benefits: Equine-assisted activities have been shown to increase attention span and problem-solving abilities.

Ironstone Farm offers several different types of equine therapy programs including therapeutic riding lessons for children with disabilities; hippotherapy (physical therapy on horseback); carriage driving lessons; veterans' programs; grief support groups; substance abuse recovery groups; autism spectrum disorder (ASD) support groups; anxiety reduction sessions; team-building workshops for businesses or organizations.

Educational Riding Programs

In addition to its therapeutic offerings, Ironstone Farm also provides educational riding programs designed for riders who want to learn more about horsemanship or compete in equestrian events. These include:

- Horsemanship classes

- Summer camps

- Show teams

- Dressage clinics

- Jumping clinics

Recreational Riding Programs

For those who simply enjoy being around horses but don't necessarily need therapeutic or educational services, Ironstone Farms offers recreational riding opportunities such as trail rides through nearby conservation land or pony rides for young children.

Volunteer Opportunities

Ironstone Farms relies heavily on volunteers who donate their time helping out around the barns or assisting during lessons. Volunteers receive training before they begin working directly with clients so they feel comfortable interacting with both people and horses alike.

Fundraising Efforts

As a nonprofit organization that receives no government funding , Ironstone Farms relies on donations from individuals , corporations , foundations , grants etc . The funds raised go towards maintaining facilities ; caring for our herd ; providing scholarships so everyone has access regardless financial situation ; purchasing equipment needed etc .
