Hill-Stead Museum provided the most stunning backdrop for our wedding in Farmington. Hosting the ceremony in the Sunken Garden and the reception at the Makeshift Theatre was a perfect choice. Jennifer from the team was incredible to work with and made sure we were her top priority throughout the process. It also felt wonderful that our rental fee supported a non-profit, preserving this historic and unique venue rather than going to a corporate entity.

Holding my daughter’s wedding on the West Lawn with appetizers in the Sunken Garden before moving to The Society Room for the reception was the perfect choice. The scenery at the Hill-Stead Museum is truly unmatched, offering stunning views of the hills, gardens, and meadows. Sharing this historic site in Farmington with our loved ones felt like a real privilege. Sarah from the Hill-Stead team made the entire planning process seamless. She was incredibly accommodating, answering every question, big or small, with great kindness. When the forecast looked gloomy, the on-site manager quickly offered to move the refreshments to the Makeshift Theater just in case. That flexibility alone relieved so much stress, even though we ultimately didn’t need the backup plan. It was a truly magical day, made special by the team’s attentiveness.

We couldn’t be happier with our experience hosting our son’s rehearsal dinner at Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington. The historic Main House provided the perfect romantic backdrop, and the accessible, comfortable setting made it easy for all our guests to enjoy the evening. The event staff went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly, coordinating seamlessly with Kane’s Market for the excellent local catering. We also appreciated the knowledgeable guides who helped us navigate the venue’s beautiful history. It was a truly memorable night, and we felt so well taken care of from start to finish. We’re also grateful to Taylor Rentals for the chairs and linens, and to the Simsbury Inn and 1820 House for hosting our family. If we had to change one thing, we might have hired a photographer to capture the moments, but the joy we felt that night is still with us. Highly recommended for a special event!

Hill-Stead Museum: A Colonial Revival House and Art Museum in Farmington, CT

Hill-Stead Museum is a unique destination that offers visitors an opportunity to explore the rich history of colonial America while also enjoying some of the finest art collections in the country. Located in Farmington, Connecticut, this museum is known for its impressive collection of Impressionist masterpieces, stunning architecture, and annual poetry festival.

The museum was originally built as a private residence by Alfred Atmore Pope and his wife Ada Brooks Pope. The couple commissioned renowned architect Theodate Pope Riddle (no relation) to design their home in 1901. The result was a stunning Colonial Revival house that still stands today as one of the most impressive examples of this architectural style.

Visitors to Hill-Stead Museum can take guided tours through the house and learn about its history and architecture. They can also view some of the many works of art on display throughout the property. One highlight is undoubtedly Hill-Stead's collection of Impressionist paintings, which includes works by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, James McNeill Whistler and others.

In addition to its permanent collection, Hill-Stead also hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year that showcase different artists or themes. Recent exhibitions have included "The Poetry Of Nature," which explored how poets have been inspired by nature over time; "Impressions Of New England," which featured works by regional artists; and "Women Artists In Paris," which highlighted female artists who studied or worked in Paris during the late 19th century.

One unique aspect of Hill-Stead Museum is its annual Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. This event brings together poets from around the world for readings and performances set against a backdrop of beautiful gardens designed by Beatrix Farrand. Visitors can enjoy live music before each reading begins while sipping wine or beer from local vendors.

Hill-Stead Museum is also committed to education and outreach. The museum offers a variety of programs for children and adults, including art classes, lectures, and workshops. It also partners with local schools to provide educational resources for teachers and students.

Overall, Hill-Stead Museum is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in art, history or architecture. Its impressive collection of Impressionist paintings alone makes it worth the trip, but visitors will also be impressed by the beauty of its gardens and the richness of its history. Whether you're a seasoned art lover or just looking for a unique day trip destination in Connecticut, Hill-Stead Museum is sure to delight.
