Highstead Foundation: Protecting Land and Promoting Conservation in New England
Highstead Foundation is a regional conservation non-profit organization that is dedicated to increasing the pace of land protection in New England and beyond through science, sound stewardship, and collaboration. Founded in 1982, Highstead has been working tirelessly to protect the natural beauty of New England by conserving its forests, wetlands, and other critical habitats.
The foundation's mission is to promote conservation by providing scientific research, education programs, and technical assistance to landowners. Highstead works with private landowners as well as public agencies to conserve important landscapes that provide habitat for wildlife species while also protecting water quality.
One of the key initiatives of Highstead Foundation is their Wildlands & Woodlands program. This program aims at conserving 70% of New England's forests by 2060. The program recognizes that forests are essential for maintaining biodiversity while also providing clean air and water resources. The Wildlands & Woodlands initiative seeks to balance economic development with environmental protection by promoting sustainable forestry practices.
Another important aspect of Highstead's work is their focus on climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. The foundation recognizes that forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Through their Forest Carbon Initiative (FCI), they work with forest owners across New England to develop forest management plans that maximize carbon sequestration potential while also promoting sustainable forestry practices.
In addition to these initiatives, Highstead Foundation provides technical assistance and educational programs for landowners who want to conserve their properties or manage them sustainably. They offer workshops on topics such as invasive species management, ecological restoration techniques, and wildlife habitat enhancement.
Highstead Foundation has been recognized nationally for its innovative approach towards conservation efforts in New England. Their collaborative approach towards working with private landowners has resulted in significant gains towards protecting critical habitats across the region.
In conclusion, if you are looking for an organization dedicated towards protecting natural landscapes while promoting sustainable development practices then look no further than Highstead Foundation! With over three decades of experience working towards conservation goals across New England - they have proven themselves time-and-again as leaders within this field!
