Hidden Harvest alleviates hunger and reduces food waste in the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Hidden Harvest: Alleviating Hunger and Reducing Food Waste in the Great Lakes Bay Region
Hidden Harvest is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste in the Great Lakes Bay Region. The organization was founded with a mission to provide healthy, nutritious food to those who need it most while also reducing the amount of food that goes to waste.
The Great Lakes Bay Region is home to many families who struggle with hunger and poverty. Hidden Harvest recognizes this issue and works hard every day to ensure that these families have access to fresh, healthy food. The organization collects surplus food from local grocery stores, restaurants, farms, and other sources before distributing it through various channels such as soup kitchens, shelters, schools, senior centers, and more.
One of the key objectives of Hidden Harvest is reducing food waste. According to recent studies by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), approximately 30-40% of all food produced in America goes uneaten each year. This amounts to billions of pounds of wasted resources including water, energy, land use as well as greenhouse gas emissions from rotting organic matter in landfills.
Hidden Harvest addresses this issue by rescuing surplus edible foods that would otherwise go unused or be thrown away due to cosmetic imperfections or overproduction. By doing so they are able not only feed people but also reduce environmental impact by diverting edible foods from landfills.
The organization's efforts have been successful so far; they have rescued millions of pounds worth of fresh produce since their inception in 1994. They work closely with local farmers who donate their excess crops which are then distributed throughout the region via their network partners.
In addition to providing nutritious meals for those facing hunger insecurity within our community Hidden harvest also offers educational programs on nutrition education for children at risk for obesity or malnutrition through partnerships with schools across Michigan's Great Lakes Bay region.
Hidden Harvest has received numerous awards and recognition for their work in the community. They have been recognized by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the United Way, and many other organizations for their efforts to alleviate hunger and reduce food waste.
The organization is run by a dedicated team of staff members and volunteers who are passionate about making a difference in their community. They are always looking for new ways to expand their reach and help more people in need.
If you're interested in supporting Hidden Harvest's mission, there are many ways to get involved. You can donate money or volunteer your time at one of their distribution centers or events. You can also help spread awareness about food waste reduction by sharing information on social media or hosting educational events within your own community.
In conclusion, Hidden Harvest is an incredible organization that has made a significant impact on reducing hunger insecurity while also addressing environmental issues related to food waste. Their dedication to providing healthy meals for those who need it most is truly inspiring, and we should all strive to support them however we can.
