Very interesting hearing of Hemingway life and his love of cats

A wonder, after a long, long journey from Miami and with the sole objective of going to see the six-toed cats, I can say that reality far exceeded expectations. I have never liked Hemingway as a writer or as a person, the house is beautiful and the environment is great. It is very well maintained, and taken care of but the cats are simply fantastic, beautiful they accept the affections in a very good way, it really is worth going just to share with the famous cats

Awesome and inspiring museum of Hemingway's home and history. The front gate is cash only, however there is a bookstore in the back which does accept cards. The books you can buy there are priced a bit higher than MSRP, but do come with the first page stamped with a "Hemingway Home and Museum" impression stamp which is quite nice if you are a fan or collector. I had a blast learning about him and seeing the property, which is incredibly inspiring in it's own right.

We had a wonderful and informative tour guide and learned quite a bit about Hemingway. Also learned that you could hold weddings on the property. The bathrooms were clean, there was a nice shop, and many six toed cats to pet.

Big fan of Gregory Clarke ,he worked with Hemingway at the Toronto Star. Hemingway called Clarke his favourite writer . Well worth the effort to find Clarke . The tour was great , highly recommend .

What a cool place to visit. This is a place not to miss.

Beautiful home and so much lovely history to learn about Mr. Hemingway. I have visited this home for years, every time I travel to key West. Don't miss the guided tour! Or the six toe-ed kitties.

An interesting stop on our trip. The cats were a nice added bonus.

Amazing place to walk around, or sit and enjoy the scenery. Some cats love the attention and others want to be left alone. Let the cats come to you. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. You can go on a tour or wander around by yourself. It was very crowded when we went.

Google just added pictures of the lighthouse instead?? I highly recommend both attractions. I went to the Hemingway house as well, and it is amazing. I'll admit that I don't really care about Ernest Hemingway whatsoever, but I learned some cool stuff about the Hemingway family anyway, like his wife wanted to dig a pool using dynamite. The madlad.
The main reason I went is that I had a personal mission to pet at least most of the cats. There was an especially fat and fluffy one who was very friendly and hugged my hand. I would come again just to see her!

If you want a tour of his cats take the guided tour. If not then just walk around on your own. This should be called The Hemingway Cat Tour

It was a great place to take a tour. Our tour guide was awesome her name was Sara. The tour was a half an hour 45 minutes.

The place is very interesting, it is well preserved. On the entrance door you can get a guide about the place. There are a lot of cats in freedom who live here.. it was the Hemingway's passion. The ticket was 14$. If you are in key West you have to go. I advice you

I went to Key West all the way from Saskatchewan, Canada to see the writer's southern point house. The website does not have a clear indication of the hours of operation. We checked the website for hours of operation. The top part of the front page says sunrise to sunset (Sunrise: 06:36 AM EST - Sunset: 05:44 PM EST). We arrived there after a long drive at around 4:10 pm. We gave cash and there is a box at the front, which asks for donation. Donation box is fine and we appreciate that.

Then we were greeted by a lady, who will be a tour guide. She asked, if we are French Speaking Canadians or English Speaking. She mentioned that she is asking this question to see which language brochure and other materials she will give us that will help us to know about Hemingway. We answered that question, but she did not give us anything. She mentioned that they close the front door at 5 pm, but we should feel free to explore a bit until 5:30 pm.

Then starts the tour. She reminded at 4:47 pm at around the end of the tour that they will close the front door at 5 pm but we should feel free to stay until 5:30 pm and can get out through the back door. At the end of the tour, she says, she will really appreciate some tips. I did not have change and could not give her anything. But other members in that tour groups gave her as much as they can.

I was trying to enjoy the time at Hemingway's house. Was trying to feel that writer through his house. Suddenly the tour guide came to us (me and my travel partner) at around 5:06 pm and said, since it's closing time, we should feel free to leave. I was very surprised! She mentioned twice earlier that we can explore there until 5:30 PM. I was not sure, what was the reason for this sudden change of her mind? I just said that, I haven't seen the reading room of Hemingway. Can I please at least see that? She said, "No, that's a private property! You can feel free to use this back gate now to leave."

I was getting the fun out of it realizing that she did not like the idea of me not giving her tips. Their website does not have any proper hours of operation. Their tour guides says different things at different times. It was extremely hot that day in Key West. Didn't expect this much of disappointed from a Nobel Winner writer's museum house. I was asking myself, what was the reason for me to drive all the way to Key West in this extreme hot, humid weather? To get humiliated for not giving couple of dollars tips to tour guide in a Nobel Winner writer's museum?

They should fix their website for a proper hours of operation and train their employees to behave well with the visitors. If this job is not enough paying for that person, she should look for a better-paid job in a commercial place.

And $14/person (and cash only)!!!! You gotta be kidding me. Thanks God, my travel partner had cash, otherwise, I would have to return back for not having cash. I would not recommend anyone to go there visit.

Wonder family friendly place. Get a view of key West history and if your a cat lover your in the right place

Excellent tour. So glad we did the tour, we learnt so much about his life. Our tour guide was named Rusty I believe, he was excellent.

Cool experience. Very good informative tour. The cats are adorable and all over the property.

Excellent - we had no idea what to expect and were really pleased we visited.....

Not being American or knowing much about literature or films were not sure what to expect but really enjoyed the tour around the house and gardens and learning all about Hemingway and his family from the Guide........and yes we enjoyed seeing all the cats and then having the time to wander around on our own and spend a bit more time in the areas that had particularly interested us...........probably best not to bring young kids as not a lot for them to see or do but of interest to older people who want to learn and see a bit about American history

Lovely afternoon walking through the home of one of the greats!

Colonial style house without particular decoration elements but with the charm of Hemingway 'presence' and the curiosity of cats with 6 fingers that populate the garden. Overall a nice and undemanding visit for those already in Key West (do not go there on purpose)

A piece of Florida history. Florida really doesn't have much history so when u find some u have to see it. The stories they tell here are great

The tour guides were engaging, there's plenty of fascinating history to learn about and the house itself is beautifully kept up. Bring a hand fan!

We only visited this museum in Key West and enjoyed the tour thoroughly. There are also many cats in the house. Great attraction.

What a story teller and one heck of a story behind this iconic property. A must see if you are staying more than one day in Key West.

Interesting history, great guides and 53 (at the time we visited) polydactyl cats. Great way to spend an hour or two.

They have tours every hour while they are open until they close. It's pretty cheap, don't touch anything either. You're allowed to take pictures just don't video tape the tours. They don't wish to be YouTube stars lol. They are very friendly and after you are free to roam the grounds.

Basically, it's a house with a whole lot of six toed cats walking around. The admission fee is high and, as you walk through the house, nothing is explained. I do not advise going.

Beautiful property with lots of history, and of course the amazing cats. Highly recommend!

It was so interesting to see Hemingway's home and his history there. Plus the famous Hemingway cats everywhere in the compound.

The house is kept very well but the tour guides definitely don't try to make the tour interesting it sounds like they're reading out of a book

Six-toed cats are also known as Hemingway cats. Writer Ernest Hemingway received a six-legged cat in the 1930s as a gift from Stanley Dexter, the ship's captain. A cat named Snowball became the ancestor of other Hemingway cats. Today, Hemingway House Museum in Florida is home to 54 six-footed cats - most of them are descendants of Snowball.

The Hemingway House offers a short period of one of the most famous writer's lives in an easy to consume form. Through a half hour hour along with self-guided plaques, the Hemingway House gives anyone who steps foot a look into the past. Don't forget to pet a cat while you're there!

It is not a big regret sights angamyeon place (regret ... may come). Finding a lot of cats everywhere is the most fun.

Very interesting place to visit. We've been here twice and each time the tour guides have been wonderful. Take your time and take in the pictures in the house. Also, the cats love to be petted so have at it.

We had a blast exploring the Hemingway Home & Gardens! We really enjoyed taking the tour and learning a number of interesting facts we didn't know about Hemingway. The ground were beautiful and full of awesome cats! Highly recommend stopping by!

Wow. Such an amazing history. Lot of history. I would go again just to read all the historical markers because there is so many to read.

Tour is less exciting and/or educational than anticipated. Cats are kept in enclosures and it's privately run

Interesting, but strong urine smell on property really was a big negative. There was no smell in the house, thank goodness. Too many people crowding into house to hear guide or see what he was speaking about.

I loved seeing a place preserved as such, where Ernest spent a good part of his life. Back in time.
