Magical place lots of walks history a feel that history is alive

Good exhibition but otherwise only the foundations of the Roman fort

Good place to see the remaining parts of Hadrian's wall and the associated forts. Makes you realise how bleak it must have been for Roman soldiers over the winter months posted at the outpost of the empire. Well setup with covid19 restrictions as of September 2020

It was neat to see the wall, wasnt life changing but it was neat if you have extra time. If there is something more appealing nearby I'd check it out, this is really just a wall. It was neat but took us a ways out of the way and took a bit of time. Was free tho to see, but cost us being able to see potential more interesting places I thought

Great, but if you have limited time to see Hadrian s Wall, skip this fort.

Here is a secret, most of the Roman forts on Hadrian s Wall were built to a standard plan. This means that is you have seen one, you have seen them all as they all look very similar (allowing for different states of preservation).

This fort isn t fully excavated and doesn t have much to see. There are good sections of wall nearby and the museum is fairly good, but if you have limited time then skip it.

One more thing... you can park nearby this fort, unlike others nearby. So if you have mobility issues then this is a good one to look at.

Massive old roman fort. It's ace. My advice: buy swords and run along the walls and play romans and celts.

Easy to find using sat nav peaceful settings staff really helpful very good views of surrounding countryside being an historic sight may not be suitable for very young children, visitors centre is quite interesting I was limited to time I had there.

Pretty cool to see the wall, but you can see it for free plus a small parking fee. The fort would be better if I had brought kids, as much of the information/activities were geared for 7-11 year olds. Parking is free of you see the fort, but not if you just see the free part of the wall.

Lovely site. Plenty of useful information. Helpful staff and nice shop.

History made visible for children and adults. Including games and toys. Worth a visit!

I remember visiting this Fort long before English Heritage took the site over from the Farmer who owned it.
Back then it was nothing more than green bumps in the field outside the Farm House. What a difference a decade or too makes.

I decided to visit after watching the Time Team programme which was shot there. Very good site with good wheelchair access and large car park. Great views up and down the Valley but hang onto your hats during windy days.

Typical Souvenir shop with the usual branded goods, check out their website for special events running through out the year.

Loved this visit to the West end of Hadrian s Wall. So interesting to learn about life at the Fort, for the soldiers and families.

We went today for the clash of the Romans which was good and reasonable value. However if there's no event on this place could be pretty boring for kids not really much there to entertain them and the film show about Hadrian's wall only has More

Cafe at first appears pricey, But tuck into the Roman burger which is totally home made and your in for a treat.

Real family friendly place, a must go. With the whole family from 1 to 91.

I liked birdoswald roman fort. We spent some time in the fort and the 'museum' afterwards we went for a walk at the longest still remaining part of the wall. It was a lovely day out. (carpark 4 pounds but the machine was out of order when we went)

Amazing. Great to think of the history of this fort and the Romans that were here. Eddy loved it here and said he will come again.

I was a bit disappointed. The "wall" is unfortunately only a tiny wall. But still worth seeing and definitely historically great.

You need to book your visit in advance. Free to English Heritage members.

Very friendly and helpful staff. If ruins are your thing this place is a MUST. To be able to touch the history is surreal.

There are little information boards for kids dotted around the site.

Toilets, coffee shop and souvenir shop available.

Very interesting place to visit with a lovely walk along the river

This is such a historically significant site and our 5 year old was really interested in reading about it.

We went in July 2020 and it was a bit wet. There s a one way system in place to comply with social distancing and sadly a few bits
Of the exhibition have had to be taken off for hygiene purposes.

Just a few things to bear in mind if you re visiting with young children.

1) the car park is a little down the Hill from the entrance and actually we would have struggled with the pram plus 2 youngsters had we not had more than 1 adult

2) Much of the site is grassy and not very pram friendly. But there s nowhere to leave the pram either (and you need to get the baby up From the car park for which you probably want your pram). I d suggest taking a carrier rather than a pram.

All in all, a good visit. And top notch coffee from the cafe at the end!

Visited June 2016. The website states limited accessibility so my dad and I set off. However when we got there we were a bit dubious about the access so my dad ran in and got told by the staff that there isn't even limited access. Being in a wheelchair I understand that often there will be parts of historic sites I can't get to but had we known what the staff said we wouldn't have visited. So definitely not a place to visit in a wheelchair until they address their access, and definitely ignore the limited access advised on the website.

Great exhibition. Fantastic for kids. They have a lego section where you can build a roman fort. Actual ruins are not very extensive. Prefer Housesteads at other end of Hadrians wall. Great trail for kuds outside. Also lovely cafe.

Nice Roman fort. With child-friendly indoor facilities and outdoor facilities with puzzles and peaceful sheep.

I must admit that I didn't know about this exhibition until we got there. As my son and I walked in the area we found the fort's ruins. No sign has been there telling me that I have to buy tickets to entry so we went in.
The place was empty, no visitors or staff have been around. Have read few of the signs that tells you about the fort's history. Very brief, but I guess they weren't made for historians.
My son found entertaining walking in one of the ditches when a lady came around and asked me if we have tickets. I told her that we don't but willing to buy. She said we can't buy tickets because they are closed (then why she asked if we have tickets? Obviously she knew that we don't), and told us to leave the site immediately. So we followed her to a gate (why don't they close the other end with a gate, too??) and left.
My advice is to either put some signs up or put a gate, as mentioned before, on the other end of the site to avoid "trespassers".
Why only one star? It's due to the way how the lady acted toward us. I know that she is volunteering time off her own to do this job which I appreciate but to treat people showing a little bit more respect would have helped. She didn't say anything that would have been disrespectful, it's the way she said that made me feel the way I feel now.

The Roman fort is well preserved, the visitor center is well done as almost always in the UK.

A great place to visit if you are into Roman sites of antiquity. Parking is a little restricted and the fort itself is not really wheelchair friendly...being largely grassed over..the remains that are still visible are over a sizeable More

The romans were so ahead of there time.there history intrests me so much.there buildings.clothes.fighting skills.architecture.and the women were. stunning in there clothes and jewlery.

Super!! The rampart extends to the left and right of the castle, the complex itself is child-friendly and easily explained. Maybe too silly for diehard Roman fans but suitable for our level and easy to understand. Interactive little museum with shop

Lovely place to visit. If you are coming from Windermere then you can visit king Arthur's table as well on the way.

Incredible. A must see/do in England. Great gift shop, lots of things to read and learn from the museum area. And the actual Roman Fort, WOW!

Due to coronavirus, pre-booking is required, best to book the day before as service can be sketchy up there

Ideal for a leisurely walk, a little history and a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

A lovely new visitor centre has sprung up here since last summer. Probably a bit steep on the entry price for the length of the visit, but the view awarded of its lush surroundings is spectacular.

We went primarily for the kite festival and it was fantastic!

English Heritage have done a very good job here. The cafe and all the staff are excellent. I am E/H member and appreciate all they do to preserve our history.

There's nothing better than being able to touch history. If you're not already a member of English Heritage I suggest becoming a member and experience these jewels of English history

Set in a really beautiful spot, Birdoswald has a really interesting little museum. The fort itself is impressive with interesting information boards around the site.

Great site for EH members, but for non is alittle pricey when compared to Vindolanda

Came as a surprise to find that Romanians/Dacians were living in UK, in 200 AD, hundreds of years before the Anglo Saxon invasion.

Great example of Roman military construction. Although, frankly, other segments of the wall exist that don t charge four pounds to park and ten pounds to enter.

Very interesting visit and a super surprising view from the South Gate!

i with my wife have passed it 3 to 4 times there is a biggish carpark a little way down a hill to park . i am disabled and this I find difficult to get up the small hill on approach to the fort on the way this time noticed a sign saying disabled parking and an arrow pointing the way up to the fort I reached the rather big gate and I noticed 3 parking places my wife opened the gate and closed it behind.we showed our membership cards and bought a couple of books I had my sticks so could we a little of the fort if it has been raining day or so before I must say you will find if difficult getting around even if you got to the east gate there is no duckboards to help wheelchair users get around it was muddy most places and you will have difficulty getting around also go when it's sunny and warm I went on a freezing day it is like the fort was built on the roof of the world it was with Dy as well I hope this helps i am not hear to criticize I just want a little more consideration for disabled people.Thanks

Excellent spot, interesting with lots to see and good quality coffee, tea and scones in the cafe. Plenty parking too.

Very interesting

A very interesting exposition from the times of the Roman Empire. Whole preserved remnants of ramparts and Roman fort. The visitor learns a lot of information about the ramparts and Romans in England, their attacks further north and so on. Very informative video is projected in a museum.

Raining and gloomy gave you a feel of what the Romans would have to endure while defending the wall from marauder's !!

Well worth driving your own Mini on the Brits Job Tours, to see how determined the Romans were to stop the marauders from the North!

A small but informative display and the fort itself was great with lovely walks

Nice long drive up. Very peaceful and quiet. I am sure the air is very fresh too.

If the Great Wall is not a good man, you can't miss the Great Wall of England-Hadrian's Wall, which is the northernmost part of the ancient Roman Empire. It has a total length of nearly 120 kilometers and contains 16 fortresses. Birdoswald is one of the more well-preserved ones. There are walking paths along the city wall. If time is limited, tourists usually visit Birdoswald. The fortress camp area is very large. You can go around the wall to see the ruins of each camp gate, and you can easily go up to the Great Wall to spend a man. Addiction, the visitor center has reconstructed the living environment of the Romans at the time, it is worth a visit!

A good walk to here along a substantial section of the wall from Gilsland with interesting remains and scenery along the way. Good signs help you to visualise what the Fort looked like along with the excavations. Covid rules had restricted the cafe to a basic takeaway with not enough outside seating which was a shame.

Fascinating place all round. Great to see how Romans lived in a fort on the edge of their empire nearly 2 thousand years ago. Interesting information center explaining all you need to know about the place. Staff really helpful too.

Really good place to visit and have a look around, the start of rhe roman wall, no where near as busy as Housesteads so plenty of time to look around
