Freshwater Future: Helping the Great Lakes - Our Grant Recipients Locations and Projects
Freshwater Future is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to protecting and preserving the Great Lakes. The organization was founded in 1996 with a mission to empower communities to protect their water resources, and since then, it has been working tirelessly towards this goal.
The Great Lakes are one of the most important freshwater resources in the world. They provide drinking water for over 40 million people, support a thriving fishing industry, and are home to countless species of plants and animals. However, they are also under threat from pollution, climate change, invasive species, and other factors.
Freshwater Future works with communities throughout the Great Lakes region to address these threats. The organization provides grants to local groups that are working on projects related to water quality, habitat restoration, public education about environmental issues, and more.
One of Freshwater Future's key initiatives is its grant program. Each year, the organization awards grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to community groups that are working on projects related to protecting or restoring the Great Lakes ecosystem. These grants have supported a wide range of projects over the years.
For example:
- In Michigan's Upper Peninsula region: A group called Friends of Lake Superior received funding for their project "Protecting Lake Superior's Coastal Wetlands." This project involved monitoring wetland health along Lake Superior's shoreline.
- In Ohio: A group called Friends of Euclid Creek received funding for their project "Restoring Euclid Creek." This project involved removing invasive plant species from an area near Euclid Creek.
- In Ontario: A group called Georgian Bay Forever received funding for their project "Monitoring Water Quality in Georgian Bay." This project involved collecting data on water quality in various locations around Georgian Bay.
These are just a few examples of the many projects that Freshwater Future has supported over the years. The organization has provided funding for hundreds of community-based initiatives aimed at protecting or restoring the Great Lakes ecosystem.
In addition to its grant program, Freshwater Future also provides technical assistance and training opportunities for community groups throughout the region. The organization offers workshops on topics such as fundraising strategies or how best practices can be used when implementing conservation programs.
Overall Freshwater future is an essential part of ensuring that our great lakes remain healthy ecosystems now into future generations by providing financial support through its grant program as well as technical assistance through training opportunities so we can all work together towards this common goal!
