Fight for Peace: Inspiring Young People to Reach Their Full Potential and Promote Peace in Our Communities
Fight for Peace is a non-profit organization that aims to inspire young people to reach their full potential and promote peace in our communities. The organization was founded in 2000 by Luke Dowdney, a former amateur boxer who wanted to use his passion for the sport as a tool for social change.
Since its inception, Fight for Peace has grown into an international movement with Academies in Brazil, London, and New York City. The organization's work has three strategic focuses: working directly with young people at its Academies, developing their potential through integrated programs of support and inclusion using its Five Pillars model; exchanging skills via its Alliance; and advocating for policy change at the local, national, and international levels.
At Fight for Peace Academies, young people aged 7-25 can participate in boxing and martial arts training alongside education programs that focus on personal development. The Five Pillars model is used to provide holistic support that addresses the physical, emotional, social, educational, and cultural needs of each individual participant.
The Alliance is a network of organizations around the world that share Fight for Peace's vision of using combat sports as a tool for social change. Through this network, organizations can exchange knowledge and expertise on how best to engage young people from marginalized communities.
In addition to direct work with young people at its Academies and through the Alliance network, Fight for Peace also advocates for policy change at all levels of government. This includes promoting policies that address issues such as youth violence prevention; access to education; employment opportunities; mental health services; gender equality; racial justice; immigration reform; environmental sustainability; peacebuilding initiatives globally.
Fight For Peace believes that every person has the right to live free from violence or fear of violence regardless of where they live or what they look like. They believe it’s possible because they have seen it happen. They have seen young people who were once involved in gangs or violence transform into leaders and role models for their communities.
