They have helped me tremendously to fight my eviction. They are very familiar with the rent laws, they can explain the eviction process thoroughly and help you file your answers through the court in a timely manner. They helped me secure a pro bono lawyer and get filing fees waived. It's been the best experience thus far.

When your in trouble with your landlord, this would be a good place to start to address your issues. The staff has compassion, listens to your concerns, will make professional phone calls on your behalf, help in setting up repayments (if your behind in rent) and has several attorneys on staff. They even assist you with micro-loans for back rent if you qualify. This is a great public service agency.

UPDATE (+1.5months post settlement): I went through with their plan of action and got screwed nine ways to Sunday. When the landlord (Essex Property Trust/Essex Fox Plaza) failed to keep their promises per the stipulated settlement agreement, I went back to EDC to have them enforce the agreement. SOL. They simply shrugged their shoulders and told me that it 'wasn't their business.' ARE YOU KIDDING? The SOBs at Essex didn't deliver in whole or part on a single stipulation, and they got away with it simply because the people at EDC threw up their hands and hung me out to dry. They are good for helping you complete paperwork. But, that's it. Don't count on them for much more help than that. Get a lawyer. It will save you in the long run.

This place is an outstanding resource for local renters facing unlawful treatment at the hands of unscrupulous landlords throughout San Francisco City and County. Those who have been unlucky enough to require their services have found, almost unanimously, that the service is an invaluable, necessary, and beneficial service provided by truly ideal-driven attorneys who VOLUNTEER their time. Through the dedication of these individuals to pursuing an ideal, they bend over backwards to obtain Justice for wronged tenants, sometimes working three-=deep straight through lunch, in an effort to meet deadlines the uninformed renter allowed to pass as far as 10 days later. Some notable associates include a man by the name of *NATHANIEL PLAYER* - one of the supervising attorneys in the Collaborative, and the one who handled my case, with great success. He's unassuming, and quite timid, upon first introduction. Make NO mistake: the man is akin to a torture machine known as "The Rack"! He stretched a particular law firm so far, on MY behalf, the pain of the plaintiff suing me for possession of my apartment was PALPABLE. He's an amazing attorney, and again, one driven by principle. I, personally, can not recommend them more highly, and if you DO find yourself in need of their service, please be as generous as possible when considering what they did for you. They are an amazing bunch and worth any charity you can give this NPO. A fantastic representation of why San Franciscans are so awesome...
