Deafway: Empowering the Deaf Community

Deafway is a UK registered charity that has been supporting the Deaf community for over 30 years. Based in Preston, Lancashire, our mission is to empower Deaf people by providing them with access to education, employment, and social opportunities.

Our Residential Services

At Deafway, we understand that many Deaf people face significant barriers when it comes to accessing housing and support services. That's why we offer a range of residential services on-site at our headquarters in Preston. Our residential services include supported living accommodation for adults with complex needs as well as short-term respite care.

We also provide specialist support for young people who are transitioning from school to independent living. Our team of experienced staff work closely with each individual to develop a personalised plan that meets their specific needs and goals.

Sign Language Courses

One of the biggest challenges facing the Deaf community is communication. Many hearing people do not know how to communicate effectively with Deaf individuals, which can lead to isolation and exclusion.

At Deafway, we believe that everyone should have access to sign language education so they can communicate more effectively with their friends, family members or colleagues who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. We offer a range of sign language courses for both hearing and non-hearing individuals at all levels - from beginner through advanced - so you can learn at your own pace.

Community Support

In addition to our residential services and sign language courses, we also provide community support for the wider deaf community in Lancashire. This includes advocacy services such as help navigating healthcare systems or legal issues; social events where you can meet other members of the deaf community; and information sessions on topics such as employment rights or financial planning.

International Projects

Deafway is committed not only to supporting the local deaf community but also those around the world who face similar challenges due to lack of resources or societal stigma towards disability. We have several international projects in Nepal, Uganda and Kenya where we work alongside local organisations providing education opportunities (including sign language), vocational training programs (such as tailoring) , health care facilities etc., empowering them towards self-sufficiency while promoting inclusion within their communities.
