Core Knowledge Foundation: Building Strong Foundations for Educational Excellence and Equity
Core Knowledge Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to promoting educational excellence and equity through the development of strong foundations of shared knowledge. The foundation was established in 1986 by E.D. Hirsch, Jr., an American educator and literary critic who believed that all children should have access to a rich, content-based education.
At Core Knowledge Foundation, we believe that knowledge is power. We believe that every child has the right to a high-quality education that prepares them for success in college, career, and life. Our approach is based on the idea that there are certain core concepts and skills that all students need to master in order to succeed academically.
Our curriculum is designed around these core concepts and skills, which we call "core knowledge." We believe that by providing students with a solid foundation of core knowledge, we can help them develop critical thinking skills, improve their reading comprehension abilities, and prepare them for success in higher education.
One of the key features of our approach is our emphasis on content-rich instruction. We believe that students learn best when they are exposed to a wide range of topics across multiple subject areas. Our curriculum includes literature from different cultures and time periods; history from ancient civilizations through modern times; science concepts ranging from basic biology to advanced physics; mathematics topics including algebraic equations and geometry proofs; art appreciation lessons featuring works from famous artists throughout history; music theory lessons covering everything from classical composers like Mozart or Beethoven up through contemporary pop stars like Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran.
We also provide free resources for educators who want to implement our approach in their classrooms.
