Our History

Brush Traction was founded in 1865 by Charles Francis Brush as the Anglo-American Brush Electric Light Corporation. The company's initial focus was on developing electric lighting systems for homes and businesses.

In 1889, Brush Electric Company merged with Thomson-Houston Electric Company to form General Electric (GE). However, GE sold off its UK-based traction business in 1902 due to anti-trust concerns.

The UK-based business continued under various names until it became known as Brush Electrical Machines Ltd. in 1947. In 1957, this company merged with British Thomson-Houston (BTH) to form Associated Electrical Industries (AEI).

In 1961 AEI merged its traction interests with those of Metropolitan-Vickers (Metrovick) to form British Insulated Callender's Cables (BICC). BICC later became part of GEC-Alsthom before being acquired by Alstom Transport UK Limited in January 1998.

Today, Brush Traction is part of Wabtec Corporation - a leading global provider of equipment and services for freight railroads and passenger transit systems - following Wabtec's acquisition of Faiveley Transport S.A., which included Faiveley Transport Gennevilliers SAS, the parent company of Brush Traction.
