In 1929, Berger Jenson and Nicholson (BJN) was formed through a merger between Lewis Berger and Sons and Jenson & Nicholson Ltd., another leading paint manufacturer.
Over time, BJN expanded its operations across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The company's portfolio included brands like British Paints, Resinous Chemicals (RCL), Cuprinol (known for its wood preservatives), John Hall & Sons (specializing in marine coatings), among others.
In 1984, BJN was acquired by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), one of Britain's largest chemical companies at that time. However, ICI faced financial difficulties in the late 1990s due to increased competition from Asian rivals like Akzo Nobel and BASF. As a result, ICI sold off several non-core businesses including its paints division.
In 2008-09 Akzo Nobel acquired ICI's paints business which included Dulux brand as well as other brands such as Glidden Professional™️ , Sikkens®️ , International®️ , Interpon®️ .
