The only downside to this five-star experience is that it might not be available for our next trip to Kauai! Also, you won't need an alarm clock—the local roosters do a great job waking you up.

Hanalei is truly a slice of paradise, especially if you prefer an authentic vibe over a polished resort experience—there are no big chains here, just local surf shops and the Big Save market. If you prefer manicured luxury, Poipu is the place to go, but for us, Hanalei is nirvana. We found Sundays to be the best days for travel in town, with lots of folks heading east from Princeville to visit. The stay was smooth and enjoyable. We all loved the beach, the local eats, the outdoor shower, and the incredibly friendly locals. A special shout-out to the team at Hanalei Bread Co for their sweet treats, great coffee, and fresh food. I honestly wish I could have stayed a month.

Combined with the many openable windows and fans, air circulation was never an issue. The kitchen is well-equipped for preparing meals, and having a washer and dryer tucked away in a back closet was a nice touch. This isn’t a luxury hotel, but it doesn’t need to be. At this price point and proximity to the bay, it’s an excellent choice. We also appreciated being away from the main traffic routes. During our stay (late June), the road closures between Princeville and Hanalei were frequent, but since we were already in Hanalei, we didn’t have to worry about waiting for the traffic lights to change. It was a stress-free way to navigate the island. We’d happily return to this charming little house!
