For over a century, August Schell Brewing Company has been a staple in the Minnesota beer scene. Founded in 1860 by German immigrant August Schell, the brewery has survived Prohibition, two World Wars, and countless economic downturns to become one of the oldest family-owned breweries in America.

History
August Schell was born in Durbach, Germany in 1828. He immigrated to America with his wife Theresa in 1856 and settled in New Ulm, Minnesota. In 1860, he founded his eponymous brewery with partner Jacob Bernhardt.
Initially producing just one type of beer – a lager made from locally grown barley – the brewery quickly gained popularity among German immigrants who missed the taste of home. By 1872, it had expanded production to include several different types of beer.
In 1890, after Bernhardt's death, August's son Otto took over as president of the company. Under his leadership, August Schell Brewing Company continued to grow despite challenges such as Prohibition (during which it produced near-beer) and World War II (which led to shortages of key ingredients).
In recent years, fifth-generation family members Jace Marti (vice president) and Ted Marti (president) have taken over leadership roles at the company.
Brewing Process
August Schell Brewing Company uses traditional brewing methods combined with modern technology to create its signature beers. The process begins with locally sourced grains that are milled on-site before being mixed with water from an underground well on the property.
The resulting mash is then boiled with hops – some grown on-site – before being cooled down and fermented using yeast strains that have been carefully cultivated for consistency.
After fermentation is complete (which can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the type of beer), each batch is tasted by expert brewers who ensure that it meets their high standards for flavor profile and quality.
