For nearly sixty years, from about 1850 until 1910, a tract of land in upper Manhattan was known as Audubon Park. This historic landmark is named after John James Audubon, the famous naturalist and painter who lived in the area during the mid-19th century. Today, Audubon Park is a vibrant community that offers residents and visitors alike a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Located on the west side of Manhattan between West 155th Street and West 158th Street, Audubon Park is bordered by Broadway to the east and Riverside Drive to the west. The park itself covers approximately six acres of land and features lush greenery, walking paths, playgrounds for children, basketball courts for sports enthusiasts.
Audubon Park has a rich history that dates back to its early days as an exclusive residential neighborhood for wealthy New Yorkers. During this time period, many prominent families built grand mansions along Riverside Drive overlooking the Hudson River. Some of these homes still stand today and are considered architectural treasures.
In addition to its stunning architecture and natural beauty, Audubon Park also boasts a vibrant cultural scene. The neighborhood is home to several museums including The Hispanic Society Museum & Library which houses one of the largest collections of Spanish art outside Spain; The Morris-Jumel Mansion which was once George Washington's headquarters during the Revolutionary War; And lastly The American Academy Of Arts And Letters which honors outstanding achievement in literature music art architecture film theater.
Audubon Park also has an active community association that works tirelessly to preserve its historic character while promoting economic development within its borders.
