Artangel is a London-based arts organization that has been producing extraordinary art in unexpected places for over three decades. Founded in 1985 by James Lingwood and Michael Morris, Artangel has become synonymous with innovative and boundary-pushing art projects that challenge the traditional notions of what art can be.
Over the years, Artangel has worked with some of the most renowned artists from around the world to create site-specific installations, performances, and exhibitions that have captivated audiences across the UK and beyond. From Rachel Whiteread's iconic House (1993) to Steve McQueen's ambitious Year 3 project (2019), Artangel's portfolio is a testament to its commitment to pushing boundaries and redefining what art can achieve.
One of Artangel's defining features is its ability to transform unconventional spaces into immersive artistic experiences. Whether it's an abandoned warehouse or an underground bunker, Artangel has a knack for finding spaces that are often overlooked or forgotten and turning them into vibrant cultural hubs.
But it's not just about creating visually stunning installations; at the heart of every project lies a deep engagement with social issues and political themes. Many of Artangel's projects have tackled topics such as migration, identity, memory, and power dynamics – challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about our society.
One such project was The Siege (1998), which took place in a disused courthouse in London. The installation recreated scenes from the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege using actors who performed live for six hours each day. The piece was both an immersive experience for visitors as well as a commentary on media representation during times of crisis.
Another notable project was Inside: Artists and Writers in Reading Prison (2016), which saw artists including Ai Weiwei, Marlene Dumas, and Wolfgang Tillmans respond to Oscar Wilde’s imprisonment at Reading Gaol through various mediums including sculpture, painting, photography & writing.
Artangel also runs an extensive education program aimed at engaging young people with contemporary art practices. Through workshops led by professional artists & curators they encourage students from all backgrounds to explore their creativity while learning about different forms of artistic expression.
