Schiffman saw an opportunity to tap into Harlem's vibrant cultural scene and transform the Apollo into a showcase for black talent.

Over the years, many legendary performers have graced the stage at the Apollo Theater including Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown and Aretha Franklin. The theater is also famous for its Amateur Night competition which has launched many careers including those of Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson.

In addition to its rich history as an entertainment venue, the Apollo Theater is also committed to promoting education and community outreach programs. The theater offers workshops on music production and performance as well as programs for young people interested in pursuing careers in arts management.

The Apollo Theater has undergone several renovations over its long history but remains true to its original mission of showcasing African American culture. In recent years it has expanded its programming beyond music to include dance performances from around the world as well as theatrical productions that explore issues relevant to contemporary society.
