Akshardham, which means the divine abode of God, is a spiritual and cultural campus dedicated to devotion, learning and harmony. It is hailed as an eternal place of devotion, purity and peace. The Swaminarayan Akshardham at New Delhi is a Mandir โ an abode of God, a Hindu house of worship that echoes timeless Hindu spiritual messages, vibrant devotional traditions and ancient architecture.
The mandir is a humble tribute to Bhagwan Swaminarayan (1781- 1830), the avatars, devas and great sages of Hinduism. It was inaugurated on November 6th 2005 by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in the presence of Pramukh Swami Maharaj.
The Akshardham complex spans over 100 acres with its main monument standing tall at 141 feet high. The monument has been constructed using pink sandstone from Rajasthan with intricate carvings that depict stories from Indian mythology.
The complex also houses exhibitions that showcase India's rich cultural heritage through multimedia shows such as 'Sahajanand Darshan' which depicts the life journey of Bhagwan Swaminarayan; 'Neelkanth Darshan' which showcases India's natural beauty; 'Sanskruti Vihar' which takes visitors on a journey through India's art forms; and 'Abhishek Mandap' where visitors can offer prayers to Lord Swaminarayan.
Apart from these exhibitions, there are also musical fountains that light up in sync with music played in the background. These fountains are located within beautifully landscaped gardens that provide visitors with an oasis amidst the hustle-bustle of city life.
Akshardham has become one of Delhi's most popular tourist destinations attracting millions every year who come to witness its grandeur and experience its serenity. The complex is open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday between 9:30 am and 6:30 pm.
