Ability KC: Empowering Children with Disabilities to Reach Their Full Potential
Ability KC is a leading non-profit organization that provides comprehensive services to children with disabilities and their families in the Kansas City area. The organization was formed by the merger of two well-established institutions, Childrenβs Therapeutic Learning Center and Rehabilitation Institute of Kansas City, which have been serving the community for over 70 years.
At Ability KC, our mission is to empower children with disabilities to reach their full potential by providing them with high-quality education, therapy, medical care, and support services. We believe that every child deserves a chance to live a fulfilling life regardless of their physical or cognitive challenges.
Our team of dedicated professionals includes licensed therapists, nurses, physicians, educators, social workers, and other specialists who work together to provide personalized care for each child. We use evidence-based practices and state-of-the-art technology to deliver effective interventions that address the unique needs of each child.
Our programs are designed to serve children from birth through young adulthood who have a wide range of disabilities such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), spina bifida, muscular dystrophy (MD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and others. We also offer specialized services for children who require ventilator support or feeding tubes.
One of our core programs is Early Intervention Services which provides early identification and intervention for infants and toddlers who show signs of developmental delays or disabilities. Our team works closely with families to develop individualized plans that promote optimal development in all areas including motor skills, communication skills, social-emotional development,
and cognitive abilities.
Another key program at Ability KC is Pediatric Therapy Services which offers physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), speech-language pathology (SLP) as well as aquatic therapy. Our therapists use play-based approaches that make therapy fun while also helping children achieve functional goals such as walking independently or communicating effectively.
We also provide Medical Rehabilitation Services which include comprehensive evaluations by board-certified physicians specializing in pediatric rehabilitation medicine. Our medical team works closely with therapists and other specialists to develop integrated treatment plans that address both medical issues as well as functional goals.
In addition to these core programs we offer several other services such as Assistive Technology Services which help children access devices such as wheelchairs or communication devices; Behavioral Health Services which provide counseling for children experiencing emotional or behavioral challenges; Camps & Recreation Programs which offer opportunities for socialization,
physical activity,and fun; Family Support & Education Programs which provide resources,support groups,and educational workshopsfor parentsand caregivers;and TransitionServiceswhichhelpyouthwithdisabilitiesprepareforadulthoodbyprovidingvocationalskills training,collegepreparation,careerexploration,andindependentlivingtraining.
