Ultramatis Ltd. is a spin out of the University of Leeds, developing its patented Ultrafast Laser Plasma Implantation (ULPI) platform manufacturing technique for advanced functional materials. ULPI can implant any glass with femtosecond-laser generated plasma – a highly charged and energetic gas, such as one containing optically active ions. This can be used in areas as varied as anti-counterfeiting for glass bottles, to advanced optical data communications components. The primary focus of Ultramatis at present is developing the manufacturing know-how and technological expertise necessary for a sophisticated anti-counterfeiting ‘optical fingerprint’ for glass bottles in the alcohol, perfume and pharmaceutical bottle industries.
