SRP was established in 1903 as the nation's first multipurpose reclamation project authorized under the National Reclamation Act by Theodore Roosevelt. During the construction of Theodore Roosevelt Dam, a telephone line was built along the Apache Trail so that Supervising Engineer Louis Hill could maintain contact with the engineers at the dam site.
