Would not it be nice if their roads work like solar panels? And can they drive their vehicles with the solar power that this produces? These questions formed the beginning of a vision for the future in 2009: the large-scale generation of sustainable energy with the sunlight that falls on 450 km2 of road surface every day. In 2009 TNO was on the innovation relay with an open invitation: 'Dream along and join us'. The province of Noord-Holland, road builder Ooms Civiel and technical services provider Dynniq picked up the invitation and together with TNO form the core consortium that SolaRoad is developing: the first road surface that captures sunlight and converts it into electricity. The ultimate goal is the realization of the dream that large parts of the road surface in the Netherlands function as a large solar panel. The generated electricity can be used for road lighting, traffic installations, households and electric vehicles.
