Promperu: Promoting Peru to the World

Promperu is a government agency that aims to position Peru in the world by promoting its image, tourist destinations, and export products with added value. The agency's mission is to contribute to the sustainable and decentralized development of the country.

Peru is a country with a rich cultural heritage, diverse geography, and abundant natural resources. However, despite its potential as a tourist destination and exporter of high-quality products such as coffee, cocoa, textiles, and handicrafts, Peru has not been able to fully capitalize on these advantages due to various factors such as lack of infrastructure, limited access to markets, and insufficient promotion.

Promperu was created in 1995 with the objective of addressing these challenges by coordinating efforts among public and private entities involved in tourism promotion and export development. The agency's activities include market research; product development; branding; advertising; public relations; trade fairs; training programs for entrepreneurs; support for small businesses; among others.

One of Promperu's main strategies is to focus on niche markets that have high growth potential or are less competitive than mainstream segments. For example, the agency has identified gastronomy as one of Peru's strengths due to its diversity of ingredients and flavors influenced by indigenous traditions as well as Spanish colonialism. Therefore Promperu has launched campaigns such as "Peruvian cuisine: A symphony for the senses" aimed at positioning Peruvian food abroad through events like food festivals or cooking contests.

Another area where Promperu has been successful is adventure tourism which takes advantage of Peru's varied landscapes ranging from coastal deserts to Andean mountains or Amazonian rainforests. Activities like trekking Machu Picchu or surfing waves in northern beaches have attracted visitors seeking unique experiences beyond traditional sightseeing tours.

In terms of exports promotion Promperu works closely with producers associations providing technical assistance on quality standards compliance certifications packaging and labeling. The agency also organizes trade missions to foreign markets where Peruvian products have potential demand or are already recognized for their quality such as the United States, Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

Promperu's efforts have yielded positive results in recent years. According to official data, tourism arrivals increased from 2.7 million in 2011 to 4.4 million in 2019 generating revenues of US$5 billion and creating jobs for more than half a million people directly or indirectly related to the sector. Exports of non-traditional products reached US$13 billion in 2020 despite the pandemic crisis which affected many sectors worldwide.

However, Promperu faces challenges ahead that require continuous improvement and innovation. For instance, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted travel patterns and forced a rethinking of tourism models towards more sustainable practices that respect local communities' rights and preserve natural resources' integrity.

Moreover, global competition is fierce with other countries investing heavily in marketing campaigns or offering lower prices for similar products or services. Therefore Promperu needs to keep up with trends and adapt its strategies accordingly while maintaining its commitment to promoting Peru's unique identity as a multicultural country with a rich history and promising future.

In conclusion Promperu is an essential player in Peru's development strategy by contributing to diversifying its economy through tourism promotion and export development activities that generate income opportunities for many people across different regions of the country while preserving its cultural heritage and natural environment.
