Polymath Research specialize in wave propagation and interaction problems in nonlinear media. Photonics devices for telecommunications applications require integrated modeling which includes physical optics effects. At Polymath they develop novel approaches to these problems, including, for example, methods that rely on the approximate evolution of phase space distributions, such as the Wigner function. These methods can replace older less general BPM techniques as explained in SPIE 1999. Another approach is to use slow-temporal-envelope descriptions where the paraxial approximation is not made and where nonlinear and diffractive effects can be balanced in all directions.
