The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) is a prosecutor’s office specialized in combating high and medium level corruption. The organization was set up to discover, investigate, indict, and reduce high and medium level corruption cases. It was set up following a model adopted by several European states such as Spain, Norway, Belgium, and Croatia. The DNA is an independent entity in its reports with the courts, with the prosecutor’s offices attached to these courts, as well as in its relations with the other public authorities. Its sources of information include notifications from citizens and legal persons; authorities with control duties such as the Financial Guard, the National Agency for Fiscal Administration, and the Anti-Fraud Department; the police; other prosecutors’ offices; and the services specialized in gathering intelligence. The National Anticorruption Directorate is based in Bucuresci, Romania.
