Plazmic K.K. provides content deployment solutions for mobile devices worldwide, and is a Japanese subsidiary of Canadian-based Research In Motion Limited (RIM). Plazmic's suite of software solutions enable rich and dynamic content creation and deployment for wireless devices worldwide. Prior to its acquisition by BlackBerry (then RIM), Plazmic raised about $8 million (CAD). Investors included the Eastern Technology Seed Investment Fund (BDC and BMO & VW), Ventures West (VW), and angels. Plazmic had about 36 employees at the time of acquisition, located mainly in Toronto with a team in Tokyo. Plazmic was founded by Jay Steele, who led the company's technology development as CTO and President. Keith Bates was the original lead VC and later became CEO. The original VC investments in Plazmic earned the CVCA's Deal of the Year Award for high IRR.
