EVAPORATION AT A GLANCE. - 2.3 trillion gallons of water (7 million acre-feet) are lost in Texas every year to evaporation: 6.3 billion gallons per day. That's nearly two-thirds of water used for agricultural uses in the state and several times the amount consumed as drinkable water. - 50% of water lost is to evaporation in many large reservoirs in the Southwest. These enormous losses are offset by massive reservoir projects, desalination plants, and ever longer pipelines, all at enormous economic and environmental cost. - <1% of the water on Earth is available to humans and other members of the biosphere. The other 99% is in oceans, locked up in the polar ice caps, or in the atmosphere. After the effects of evaporation, how much does that leave us?
