Ludum Dare is an online community that organizes “Ludum Dare”, a game development competition held three times a year. Ludum Dare is held in April, August, and December and during these events developers around the world spend a weekend creating games based on a theme suggested by the community. All participants are given 48 hours to develop a video game by creating the game code, content, and source code during the competition single-handedly. After the end of the competition participants are given three weeks to play and rate other submitted games to determine the winners. There are no physical or cash prizes, but each participant retains full ownership of their game. The community is known for running its game jams for over 12 years. Ludum Dare was launched in April 2002 by Geoff Howland and the website is operated and maintained by Mike Kasprzak (PoV).
