FSMS is South Africa's free SMS messaging platform. Users are able to register and send free text messages using the FSMS web and mobile sites. During the registration process, information is collected about the users regarding their age, location and gender. The sent SMSes are then appended with a short, demographically targeted advertisement. Redistributing ad revenue ensures the service stays free and enables FSMS to address the problem of expensive communication in Africa.
