Online businesses must be able to accept debit & credit cards in order to produce cashflow. However, online businesses generally have higher chargeback activity than a "Swiped" or "Brick & Mortar" merchant as purchases may not be recognized on a statement or now the growing trend is the increase in fraudulent or stolen credit card chargebacks. When an online merchant exceeds 1% in their chargeback ratio they become a problem account for the payment processor & subject to possible closure. When an online merchant exceeds 2%, they become classified as an excessive chargeback account by Visa/MC and force the payment processor to close the account. Consumer Verification Alerts allow the merchant to have advance notice of a chargeback and can resolve it before it becomes an actual chargeback thus keeping the ratio below Visa/MC thresholds.
