CARMDAKSH works primarily with poor women from tribal communities like Gond, Kanwar Baiga, Oraon and poor section of the society. More than 70% of the population in the intervention area comprises of small, marginal farmers or landless people. Agriculture is rain fed. Level of indebtedness is high with credit available at high rates of interest. Due to poor returns from agriculture people are forced to migrate in search of employment- most of this labour is unskilled, casual labour earning low wages. In general the Caste, tribal and gender identities are pronounced and such hierarchies reinforce economic disadvantage and lack of control over resources and decision making.
